Rodney “Binx” Watts was a standout golfer and longtime ambassador for Morgan State University. A graduate of Morgan State College in 1967, Watts captained the Bears to the school’s first CIAA Golf Championship in 1967 under legendary coach Dr. Julius Taylor.
A Baltimore native and graduate of Mount Saint Joseph High School, Watts began making an impact in golf while still an amateur, challenging segregation at local private golf clubs. His Morgan State championship team included fellow Baltimore golf legends Tim McCready, Al “Frog” Wilson, Richard Brown, and John Bullock.
Following Morgan, Watts earned his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1970 and pursued a career in law before eventually making golf his profession. He played the game for more than 60 years, became a PGA professional in 1995, competed on senior professional tours, and later served as a golf professional at Pine Ridge Golf Course and head professional at Marlton Golf Club.
Watts and his 1967 teammates were inducted into the Morgan State University Varsity “M” Club Hall of Fame in 2004. He remains an important figure in Morgan State's golf history and Baltimore's African American golf legacy.
