James “Jim” Turpin played football and basketball at Morgan. He was rated among the top fullback who has played for Morgan. “Jim” was a great punter, and had the potential to become a professional football player.
“Jim” was an All-America fullback in the 1946 and 1947 seasons. He was elected co-captain with Roy Cragway for the 1948 season, but the cruel hand of fate did not allow him to lead his team. He was struck by lightning during the summer. Jim was Mr. Fullback-delucke.
He was called the Morgan-Marion Motley, who always got the 1st down.
A memoriam to Jim has been written “Slowly and sadly we laid him down, from the field of fame fresh and glory. We carved not a line and we raised not a stone, but we let him alone with his glory.”
