Ramond Chester was born on June 28, 1948 in Cambridge, Maryland. He was a standout tight end for Morgan State University and a key member of the Bears’ historic 1968 undefeated team. A former All-CIAA selection, Chester etched his name into Morgan State history during the legendary matchup against Grambling at Yankee Stadium, scoring Morgan’s only touchdown in the Bears’ dramatic 9-7 victory. He also blocked a punt that led to a safety, helping Morgan secure the historic win.
Chester’s collegiate success translated into an outstanding professional career. Selected by the Oakland Raiders with the 24th overall pick in the 1970 NFL Draft, he went on to play for the Raiders and Baltimore Colts. Chester was named NFL Rookie of the Year in 1970, earned four Pro Bowl selections, and won a Super Bowl with Oakland in 1980. He was inducted into the Morgan State University Varsity “M” Club Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Black College Football Hall of Fame in 2018.
