Dr. Lyons is married to Angelita Sierra and the father of six children (Danielle, Brianni, Courtney, Kelly, Brianni, Mike and Waverly) and the grandfather of six grandchildren. He attended Arundel Senior High School, where he excelled in football, wrestling, and track. Upon graduating from high school in 1976, Dr. Lyons was offered a full scholarship to play football and to wrestle at Morgan State University. Dr. Lyons graduated from Morgan State University in 1980, earning a bachelor's degree in Psychology. Dr. Lyons would continue his educational journey, earning a master's degree in Clinical Psychology from North Carolina Central University and a Doctorate degree in Education from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Lyons is currently employed as an Assistant Principal in Anne Arundel County Public Schools and will retire at the end of this school year. Dr. Lyons has been employed as a School Psychologist, Director of Student Services, and Assistant Superintendent.
Dr. Lyons is a Life Member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He was initiated in 1977 on the campus of Morgan State University, Pi Chapter. He is a current member of Lambda Gamma Gamma Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Dr. Lyons also is a member of the Psi Chi Honor Society and a Prince
Hall Mason. He is a Life Member of Morgan State University Alumni Association, Varsity "M", and Booster Clubs.
During his four years at Morgan State University, Dr. Lyons excelled in wrestling and football. In wrestling, he earned All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) honors twice as the Heavyweight and 190-pound weight class champion in 1977-1978. Dr. Lyons would place 3rd in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Regional Wrestling Championship. Dr. Lyons was a 2x NCAA Wrestling Division II qualifier in 1977 and 1978. Dr. Lyons was Honorable Mention at the NCAA Division II Wrestling National Championships in 1978 after advancing to the quarterfinals. Dr. Lyons was co-captain of the 1977 and 1978 wrestling teams under the legendary Coach James Philips.
In addition to wrestling, Dr. Lyons played on two MEAC Football Championship teams in 1976 and 1979. He played linebacker, noseguard, and defensive end. Dr. Lyons was selected twice as an Honorable Mention on the All-State Football College Team.
Dr. Lyons also coached football at North Carolina Central University and was the wrestling coach at Archbishop Mitty High School. While at Archbishop Mitty High School, Dr. Lyons assisted in recruiting Northern California's number 1 volleyball player to come play at Morgan State University. Jakaria Stewart became the top volleyball player in the MEAC and was eventually inducted into Morgan State University's Hall of Fame in 2014.
