NORFOLK, Va., May 9, 2023 – Morgan State track & field competed at day one of the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Dick Price Stadium on Norfolk States University's campus on Tuesday.
Morgan State leads the women's team standings after three scored events, racking up 32 points on Tuesday. Norfolk State and 2022 defending champion Howard are close behind with 20.50 points each, while North Carolina Central has 15.50 points.
In the men's team standings, 2022 defending champion Norfolk State has 34.50 points to 29 for North Carolina Central. Delaware State is in third with 19, and Howard has 11.5 points to sit in fourth. Morgan State is tied with Maryland Eastern Shore with 3 points apiece.
Morgan finished 1-2 in the women's discus. In her final throw of the competition, Johnelle Johnson threw 46.68 meters for gold, while Terine Lambert threw 43.88 meters for silver.
In the women's high jump, Tia Lucas of North Carolina Central cleared a season-best height of 1.68 meters to take gold, while Morgan's Tia Jackson recorded a mark of J1.68 meters to take silver.
Through four events in the women's heptathlon, Delaware State's Catherine Glenn is in the lead with 3,143 points, followed by Howard's Jasmyn Hunter (2,994 pts) and Lea Williams-White (2,851 pts). Morgan's Makenzie Harris sits in fourth place with 2,825 points.
Howard's Jessica Wright posted the top time in the preliminary heats for the women's 400-meter hurdles, clocking in at 59.38 to win her heat and post the lone sub-minute time in the field. In all, the Bison will have four of the eight finalists, with Cathrina Morris (1:00.08), Aniya Woodruff (1:02.12) and Monika Williams (1:02.13) also qualifying.
Norfolk State's Mercyline Kimaiyo won the women's 10,000 meters by turning in a time of 37:09.91.
Coppin State's Latifa Ali ran a 24.01 to post the fastest time in the women's 200 meter preliminaries. Howard placed five finalists in the field, paced by Tiffani Rae Pittman, who had the second-fastest time with a 24.10.

John Purvis of Morgan State posted a sixth place finish in the men's discus with a mark of 46.13 meters, while teammate Tarique Gooden turned in a time of 55.77 in the men's 400m hurdles to qualify for the finals on Thursday.
In the men's high jump, Lamont Victoria of North Carolina Central cleared 2.11 meters to take gold.
Howard occupies the top slot in the men's decathlon; through five events, as Eric Brown has 3,469 points and he holds a 243-point lead over Norfolk State's Rayquan Smith (3,226 pts). Coppin State's Amiri Goode sits in third place with 3,048 points.
In the men's 200 meters, Norfolk State's Kai Cole was the fastest in the prelims, clocking in at 21.03. Howard's Ashton Daniel was second quickest with a 21.07.
Norfolk State's Gidion Sigei ended the night by winning the men's 10,000 meters in 32:22.78.
The Blue and Orange continue MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship Competition with day two. Wednesday's action will get underway at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon. The men's and women's shot put and long jump will all follow at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., and running events will kick off at 2:50 p.m. with the women's 100-meter hurdles.
