Morgan State Men Show True Grit on MEAC Outdoor Track & Field's Second Day

NORFOLK, Va. (May 14, 2026) -- The Morgan State University men's track & field team delivered a determined effort Friday during Day 2 of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships at William "Dick" Price Stadium on the campus of Norfolk State University.
 
The Bears were fueled by a conference title in the hammer throw and a pair of strong qualifying performances on the track as Morgan State closed the day in sixth place overall with 27 team points heading into Championship Saturday.
 
Sophomore Demond Smith highlighted the day for the Bears by capturing the MEAC championship in the hammer throw with a winning toss of 49.58 meters. Smith also added points in the shot put, recording a personal-best mark of 14.49 meters to finish eighth overall.
 
Morgan State also picked up valuable points in the long jump, where freshman Derrick McCorkle Jr. posted a leap of 7.14 meters to place sixth. Freshman Noah Hopes narrowly missed scoring after finishing ninth with a mark of 6.84 meters, while senior Jadon Ra-Akbar placed 11th at 6.75 meters.
 
On the track, sophomore Doyin Smith advanced to the finals of the men's 100-meter dash after recording a time of 10.45, the fourth-fastest qualifying mark of the preliminaries. Sophomore Caleb Mincey also turned in a standout performance, qualifying for the finals of the 800 meters with the fastest preliminary time of the day at 1:49.03.

The Bears narrowly missed additional qualifiers in several events. Jadon Ra-Akbar finished ninth in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 14.56, while sophomore Maxim Copeland just missed advancing in the 400 meters after placing ninth in 47.42. Freshman Myles Dorsey added a time of 49.40 to finish 22nd overall.
 
In the 100-meter preliminaries, freshman Donavon Winslow and sophomore Ronald Gilmore finished 17th and 18th, respectively, with times of 10.84 and 10.86. Freshman Keenan Frisby added a 12th-place finish in the 800 meters after posting a time of 1:53.55.
 
Championship Saturday will stream live on ESPN+ beginning at 1 p.m. The broadcast opens with the 4x100-meter relay finals and concludes with the men's 4x400-meter relay final at 4:15 p.m. Team trophies and Outstanding Performer honors will be presented following the completion of the meet.

Prelims

Doyin Smith qualified for the finals with a personal-best time of 21.31, finishing eighth overall. Maxim Copeland placed 16th in 21.78, Ronald Gilmore recorded a season-best 21.88 to finish 20th, and Myles Dorsey placed 23rd in 22.37.
Field Events:
Discus
Demond Smith earned bronze with a throw of 46.12 meters.
 
High Jump
Isaac Rankin secured a silver-medal finish after clearing 2.03 meters. Jeryco Sheppard placed eighth with a mark of 1.95 meters, while KeSean-Jordan Rhooms finished ninth after clearing 1.90 meters.
