NORFOLK, Va. (April 16, 2023)--The Lady Bears' track and field team traveled to Virginia's Tidewater area of Norfolk this past weekend to compete in the Norfolk State University Invitational on Saturday at William Dick Price Stadium.
 
If Saturday's performance was a preview of what to expect when Morgan State returns to Norfolk State for next month's Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Track & Field Championships (May 9-11), then the Lady Bears could have the makings for a successful title run.
 
The Lady Bears concluded the meet with 28 top-10 finishes, including 18 top-five marks and had three event champions.
 
On the track, senior Rachel Field captured gold in the 5000-meter run, finishing in a time of 19:05.66. In the field events, Tia Jackson continued her winning streak this outdoor season in the long jump, earning a victory with a leap of 18-feet-11.75 inches (5.78m). It was her third straight win in the long jump since beginning the season with a second-place finish in the event. Ishana Shell would win the pole vault with a height of 10-feet-00.00 inches (3.05m).
 
Morgan State also had six second-place finishes with Johnelle Johnson leading the way with two silvers. Johnson finished second in the discus throw with a mark of 150-feet-05 inches (45.86m) and had a toss of 43-02.25 (13.16m) in the shot put to place second. Tia Jackson came in second in the high jump at 5-feet-03.75 inches (1.62m) and Denisha McLaurin had a mark of 17-feet-11.50 inches (5.47m) to take second in the long jump.
 
Asydiah Pray-Brown ran a time of 2:16.96 to finish second in the 800 meter run, while the Lady Bears' 4X400 meter relay team of Jalissa Emmens, Yasmine George, Asydiah Pray-Brown and Destiny Ward finished in second after crossing the line in a time of 3:54.20.
 
Next Up: Morgan State will return home this Saturday, April 22 to host the annual MSU Legacy Meet at 9 a.m. at Hughes Stadium. Morgan State will honor its senior class during a ceremony on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
