BALTIMORE, Md. (April 20, 2023) -- Morgan State men's basketball is excited to announce that East Carolina transfer guard Wynston Tabbs has signed with the Bears will be eligible for the 2023-24 season.
"I am so excited to have Wynston here and on board with us," said Morgan coach Kevin Broadus. "Wynston is an accomplished player at the highest level. He was very successful in the ACC at Boston College. He knows how to run a team and he knows when to score!"
"Wynston has all the essentials necessary to make an immediate impact on our program."
Tabbs spent the previous season at ECU where he played in 14 games with one start for the Pirates in his return to action after knee surgery in both knees. He averaged 10.5 minutes per game, scoring 3.3 points and grabbing 1.1 rebounds per game. He shot 32 percent from the field and 27 percent from 3-point range. His best performance came against UT Arlington on Nov. 23, where he scored 16 points in 21 minutes on a 5-for-10 performance from the floor.
He was originally brought in as a transfer by former head coach Joe Dooley. But he missed the entire 2021-22 season following knee surgery. Tabbs averaged more than 13 points per game through his time at Boston College across 27 games. As a freshman, he started 14 of 15 games, averaging 13.9 points and 2.7 assists. He missed 16 games and the complete 2019-20 campaign due to his first knee surgery.
The Suitland, Maryland product joins 6-foot-7 forward Myles Thompson as part of the Bears' 2023-24 recruiting class.
Tabbs was a two-time Washington Post Winter All-Met selection and First Team All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference honoree as a standout guard at St. Mary's Ryken High School (Leonardtown, Md.). He averaged 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game as a senior for the Knights and earned First Team All-St. Mary's County. He poured in a career-high 43 points in a win over Carroll and had eight games with 20 or more points.
Thompson joins an MSU team that returns veteran guards Kamron Hobbs (8.4 ppg) and Will Thomas (8.9 ppg). The Bears lost five seniors Isaiah Burke (18.7 ppg), Malik Miller (17.5 ppg), Lewis Djonkam (7.9 ppg), Ty Horner (2.6) and Collin Nnamene (2.2 ppg).
In his fourth season at MSU, Broadus led the Bears to a 15-16 overall record, and placed fifth in the MEAC standings with a 8-7 record before falling in the MEAC Tournament quarterfinals game.
