NORFOLK, Va. (May 2, 2022)--Morgan State junior outfielder
Asia Thomas was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Softball Co-Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola on Monday. It marks the first weekly honor for Thomas, who shared this week's award with senior Kalita Dennis of Howard.
Howard freshman Sidney Fletcher was named MEAC Rookie of the Week and Coppin State sophomore Vanessa Carrizosa was named MEAC Pitcher of the Week.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Thomas batted .556 (5-for-9) to help the Lady Bears sweep the three-game series against North Carolina Central and clinch the MEAC regular-season title. Morgan State also set the program records for wins in a season (29) and MEAC wins in a season with 18.
Thomas, who hit safely in all three games, recorded two RBIs, a run scored and walked twice to record a .667 on-base-percentage, while also collecting two stolen bases.
Thomas began the series with a triple, a run scored and an RBI, then had a two walks, a stolen bases and one hit in the second game. She concluded the series going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base.
The Lady Bears (29-13, 18-3 MEAC), winners of a season-long 14-games, close out the regular season on Wednesday, May 4, when they host Drexel in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Lois T. Murray Field.
