Lady Bears Sweep UMES In Doubleheader

Morgan State wins third straight multi-game series.

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 28, 2026)--The Morgan State softball team returned to action on Sunday afternoon and earned a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore, following a 9-1 win in six innings and a 7-2 victory at Lois T. Murray Field. It was the first three-game series sweep this season for Morgan State, which has now won three consecutive multi-game series.
 
Game 1
It was all Morgan State in the opener, as the Lady Bears recorded 14 hits and scored nine runs. The Hawks were held to four hits and a run.
 
Morgan State (8-17, 5-4 MEAC) held a 1-0 lead in the first when Hunter Newman doubled to right field to score Cassie White. The Lady Bears then added three more runs in the second to increase their advantage to 4-0.
 
UMES (9-23, 1-8 MEAC) got on the board in the third inning when Amaya Nunez flied out to left field to score Makalah Clark.
 
Morgan would get the run back in the bottom half of the inning, when Newman homered to left field to put the Lady Bears ahead 5-1. The Lady Bears added two more runs in the fourth when Millie Cousins singled through the right side to score White and Newman doubled to right field to bring home Cousins to give the hosts a 7-1 lead.
 
The Lady Bears added to their cushion with their final two runs coming in the sixth inning. Gianna Ettor singled to the right to score Olivia Pagano and singled down the right field line to bring home Rylee Hyde for the game winner.
 
Morgan State was paced by Alison Keener and Newman, who both went 4-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Keener had a RBI and Newman finished with a game-high 3 RBI. White recorded two hits, two runs, a walk and RBI in the win.
 
Serena Rodriguez got the win for Morgan State and improved to 2-8 in the circle. She tallied a game-high five strikeouts, while surrendering a run on four hits and two walks in six innings pitched.
 
Clark went 2-for-2 at the plate with a run scored to lead the Hawks. Dani Brown (5-7) was tagged with the loss. Brown pitched 1.1 innings, surrendering seven hits, four runs, two walks the tossed three strikeouts.
 
Game 2
Searching for its first three-game series sweep of the season, the Lady Bears' bats remained hot and along with some stellar defensive play, Morgan State would complete the series sweep with a 7-2 victory over the Hawks.
 
The Lady Bears would finish with 11 hits, scoring seven runs, while UMES would score two runs on seven hits.
 
The Hawks struck first with two runs in the first inning when Makalah Clark singled through the right side to score Jada Lacey and Emily Gunther.
 
Morgan State quickly made up the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the second to even the score. Olivia Garner doubled to score Jayla Campos and Cassie White singled to right center to score Garner for the second run.
 
The Lady Bears took the lead for good with a run in the fourth when Alison Keener scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Campos to give Morgan the 3-2 lead. The hosts then added four more runs in the fifth for the 7-2 advantage.
 
Pagano, who tripled to right field to bring home Rylee Hyde, later scored on a wild pitch to Morgan State ahead 5-2. Gianna Ettore doubled to center field to score Dejah Jones and Ettore scored the final run of the day when Campos grounded out to second.
 
Millie Cousins got the win and improved to 6-7 on the season. Cousins would strikeout a game-high five Hawks in seven innings pitched. Chloe Weber fell to 1-7 with the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
 
Morgan State was led by White, who had three hits in four at bats and a RBI. Keener finished 2-for-3 with a run and Garner was also 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
 
Morgan State will be off until Friday, April 3, when it travels to Dover, Del. to take on Delaware State in a MEAC doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. The Lady Bears and Hornets will conclude their series with a single game on Saturday at 11 a.m.
 
The Hornets (10-16, 3-6 MEAC) were dealt an 11-10 loss at Coppin State on Sunday to close out its series. The loss ended a four-game winning streak, which included a doubleheader sweep of Coppin State the day before to earn the series win.
