Morgan State Men’s Track & Field Leaves Mark at Legacy Track Meet

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 18, 2026) -- The Morgan State men's track & field team continued its outdoor season this weekend by hosting the annual Legacy Track Meet.

The Bears delivered a strong overall performance, finishing as the meet runner-up with 107 points. Coppin State claimed the team title with 111 points, followed by Delaware State (104.5), UMES (46.5), and Howard (38).

Morgan State was powered by standout efforts across both track and field events, with multiple athletes recording personal-best marks and key scoring finishes throughout the weekend.

The Bears showed strength in the sprints, middle-distance races, throws, and jumps, consistently adding points and staying in contention from start to finish.
With momentum building, Morgan State now turns its attention to the Penn Relays next week, aiming to carry its strong performances forward in the outdoor season.


FRIDAY, APRIL 17
Morgan State's men opened Day 1 on Friday with a strong showing in the field events, highlighted by a pair of first-place finishes. Sophomore Demond Smith led the way by capturing the hammer throw title with a personal-best toss, while freshman Jacob Denny added another victory with a personal-best mark in the javelin, giving the Bears an early boost to start the meet.

Hammer Throw
Sophomore Demond Smith posted a personal best toss of 49.02m on his third attempt to capture 1st place. His previous personal best was a mark of 48.94m.

Javelin
Freshman Jacob Denny recorded a personal best toss of 51.07m to post a 1st place finish – his toss ranks No. 9 in HBCUs.

DAY 2 | SATURDAY, APRIL 18
Morgan State's men closed Day 2 with 11 top-five finishes across track and field events. Freshman Chege Kaba ran a personal best to place 2nd in the 400m hurdles, while the 4x100m relay team finished 3rd with a season-best 41.20. Sophomore Doyin Smith advanced to the 100m finals with a PR of 10.44 and placed 4th, and senior Jadon Ra-Akbar took 3rd in the 110m hurdles. In field events, sophomore Demond Smith finished 2nd in the discus (46.56m), freshman Jeryco Sheppard placed 3rd in the pole vault (4.47m), and Ra-Akbar added a 2nd-place finish in the long jump (6.97m), with freshman Derrick McCorkle Jr. right behind in 3rd (6.93m). The Bears wrapped a strong finish at the Legacy Track Meet with multiple podium performances.

Track Events:
400mH
Freshman Chege Kaba ran a personal-best 53.39 to finish in 2nd place, while freshman Seth Minter posted a time of 57.83 to place tied for 12th.

4x100m Relay
The Morgan State 'A' team (A. Sims, D. Smith, D. Winslow, M. Copeland) crossed the finish line with a 3rd place finish with a season-best time of 41.20.

1500m
Freshman Natnael Gebremariam ran a time of 4:16.25 to place 18th.

100m
Sophomore Doyin Smith advanced to the finals with a personal best time of 10.44 and placed 4th in the finals with a time of 10.41. Sophomore Ronald Gilmore and freshman Donavon Winslow placed 12th (10.66) and 18th (10.83), respectively. Freshmen Abrahm Vargas ran a 10.9 (28th), and Derrick McCorkle Jr. ran an 11.13 (35th).

110mH
Senior Jadon Ra-Akbar qualified for the finals with a time of 14.65, along with freshman Chege Kaba, who recorded a time of 15.26. Ra-Akbar would go on to place 3rd in the finals with a time of 14.41, while Kaba finished 6th with a time of 14.77.

400m
Sophomore Caleb Mincey ran a personal best time of 48.17 to finish 7th, followed closely behind by sophomore Maxim Copeland and freshman Myles Dorsey, who tied for 8th place as they both ran a 48.66. Senior Antonio Sims ran 49.97 (16th), freshmen Christian Raysor and Cameron Stuckless, ran a 51.26 (28th) and 51.47 (31st) respectively.

800m
Freshman Keenan Frisby raced to a 6th place finish with a time of 1:54.07. Freshman Miguel Graham ran a time of 1:56.99 (16th), and freshman Joshua Moore placed 27th with a time of 2:01.54. In Heat 1, sophomore Samuel Skinner went down with an injury as he was rounding toward home in first place.
 
200m
Sophomore Doyin Smith placed 5th overall with a time of 21.32. Sophomore Maxim Copeland ran a 21.66 (11th) and freshman Myles Dorsey ran a 21.94 (15th). Freshman Donavan Winslow, freshman Seth Minter, and sophomore Ronald Gilmore placed 22nd (22.17), 23rd (22.18), and 24th (22.22), respectively.
 
Field Events:
Discus
Sophomore Demond Smith finished in 2nd place with a mark of 46.56m.

Pole Vault
Freshman Jeryco Sheppard placed 3rd by clearing 4.47m
Long Jump
Senior Jadon Ra-Akbar finished 2nd place with a leap of 6.97m, with freshman Derrick McCorkle Jr. took 3rd place with a mark of 6.93m.

High Jump
Junior Isaac Rankin cleared 1.95m to finish in 5th place, while sophomore KeSean-Jordan Rhooms and freshman Jeryco Sheppard tied for 6th place with a mark of 1.90m. Jahshua Lamothe placed 9th with a mark of 1.85m.

Shot Put
Sophomore Demond Smith finished 11th with a toss of 12.98m.

Triple Jump
Sophomore KeSean-Jordan Rhooms finished in 3rd place with a personal best leap of 14.67. Freshman Noah Hopes added a 14.10m leap to take 6th place, while freshman David Douglas placed 9th with a mark of 13.83m.
