Morgan State Track & Field Ready for VMI Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 21, 2026) — The Morgan State men's and women's track & field teams will continue their indoor season on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23–24, as the Bears compete in the VMI Invitational. The meet will be held at the CPTF–Corps Physical Training Facility in Lexington, Virginia.

Morgan State enters the meet building on momentum from a strong showing at the HBCU Showcase in New York, where both squads posted multiple top performances against a competitive field. The men's team finished fifth overall with 42 points, while the women placed fifth with 36 points, highlighted by several podium finishes.

On the men's side, the Bears have been fueled by a balanced effort across the sprints, jumps, and throws. Morgan State has shown particular strength in the field events, as freshman Demond Smith captured gold at the HBCU Showcase with a winning throw of 16.18 meters. The sprint and middle-distance groups have also continued to post season-best marks, highlighted by senior Caleb Mincey successfully defending his title in the 800 meters by crossing the tape in 1:52.89. The men will look to carry that consistency into Lexington as they fine-tune performances ahead of the MEAC Indoor Championships.

The women's team has shown steady improvement early in the indoor season, with strong contributions across the sprints, middle-distance races, and field events. Several returners and newcomers have emerged as key point scorers, highlighted by sophomore Keira Stewart, who captured first place at the HBCU Showcase with a personal-best leap of 6.02 meters—a mark that currently ranks second among HBCU competitors. Sophomore Janiya Glass also turned in a s
tandout performance, racing to a first-place finish with a personal-best time of 7.83. These performances have provided valuable depth and versatility for the Bears as they continue to build toward peak form later in the season.

"This weekend's meet is all about execution—trusting the process, finishing strong, and continuing to work toward the MEAC Indoor Championship," said head coach Neville Hodge.
