PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (September 20, 2025) --Â Morgan State cross country turned in a strong performance Saturday at the Maryland Eastern Shore Invitational, with both the men's and women's squads finishing inside the top three.
The Lady Bears finished second overall with 38 points, behind Maryland Eastern Shore (23). Lincoln University placed third with 65, while Coppin State came in fourth with 100.
Graduate standout Crystal Coke led Morgan State, crossing the line in 20:22.77 to secure 4th place overall. She was quickly followed by Aaliyah Headley (5th, 20:49.09) and Hemetii Apet (6th, 20:51.35), giving the Lady Bears three runners in the top 10 and a strong foundation for their runner-up finish.
On the men's side, Morgan State battled to a third-place finish with 45 points, just two points behind Coppin State (43) and nine points shy of meet-winner Maryland Eastern Shore (36).
Natnael Gebremariam paced the Bears, placing 4th in 29:00.35. He was closely followed by Samuel Skinner (5th, 29:07.23) and Caleb Mincey (6th, 29:37.76), with all three finishing in the top six to keep Morgan State in contention throughout the race.
Despite narrowly missing out on a runner-up spot, the Bears showed depth and resilience across both squads.
"Today's takeaway from this weekend's competition was the progress and effort we saw on both the men's and women's sides," said Head Coach Neville Hodge. "The men had a strong performance from our big three of Natnael Gebremariam, Samuel Skinner, and Caleb Mincey. The freshmen had a few setbacks, but I'm confident we'll improve moving forward.
The women also showed improvement, led by Crystal Coke, Aaliyah Headley, and Hemetii Apet. The rest of the squad is continuing to build off last week's competition. They just have to keep getting stronger mentally and continue to believe in the process." Stated Coach Hodge.
The Bears are back on the field on October 4th for the HBCUÂ Challenge in Cary, North Carolina.
