Morgan State Falls Short In Extra Innings, 4-2

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 13, 2025)—The Morgan State softball team dropped its second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series of the season, falling to Norfolk State, 4-2 in nine innings in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field.

The visiting Spartans, who won Saturday's single game, 6-1 to end an eight-game losing skid to Morgan State, has now claimed its first series win over the Lady Bears since winning 2-of-3 in Baltimore during the 2019 season.

Norfolk State improved to 17-16 overall, 10-4 in the MEAC, while the Lady Bears dropped to 13-22, 9-5 MEAC.

With the series loss, the Lady Bears fell to third place in the league standings, as Norfolk State moved into second place and holds the tiebreaker over Morgan State due to the series win.

Graduate player Victoria Fletcher, who was honored prior to the game for Senior Day, got Morgan State on the board with her double hit to right field, scoring Amber Rivas for the first run of the bottom of the first. Morgan Harrell-Alvarez later singled to bring in Jayla Campos for the 2-0 lead.

Morgan's two-run advantage would hold up until the top of the fourth inning when the Spartans scored twice to even the score at 2-2.

Emory Shorts, who doubled to bring in Kailey Bryant for the first run, would score the tying run on a single hit to left field by Maya Johnson.

The score would remain tied at 2-2 and the two teams would play extra innings. Morgan State had a golden opportunity to put the game away in the eighth when Alison Keener reached base, but Millie Cousins was thrown out at home, ending the potential game winner.
