Morgan State Defeats Coppin State In Series Opener, 9-4

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 24, 2026)--Morgan State moved one step closer to clinching a spot in the upcoming Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball championship, following its 9-4 victory over crosstown rival Coppin State on Friday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field.

Game 2 of the originally scheduled doubleheader was called off due to rain. The two teams will now play a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first game beginning at 11 a.m.

The Lady Bears (10-26, 7-12 MEAC), who control their own postseason destiny, jumped on Coppin State with four runs in the first inning and another four more in the second to take an 8-0 lead.

Hunter Newman's bases loaded sacrifice fly scored Cassie White and Olivia Garner scored on a Coppin throwing error to give Morgan a 2-0 lead. The host added to the lead when Olivia Pagano tripled to right field to score Millie Cousins. Alison Keener would fly out to right field to score Pagano for the fourth run of the opening inning.

Morgan State extended its cushion to 6-0 when Garner doubled up the middle to score two runs in the second. Cousins would hit a two-run homer to center field, making it an 8-0 lead for the Lady Bears.

Coppin State (8-23, 7-12 MEAC) began to slowly chip away at the eight-run deficit with two runs in the fourth, capped off by Leslie Sereno's double down the left field line to score Kylee Sandino, making it an 8-2 game.

Sandin homered in the sixth inning, and Xzylia Maravilla doubled to score Sereno, cutting Morgan's lead in half at 8-4.

Denver Obermeyer closed out the scoring when she homered in the bottom of the sixth for the 9-4 victory.

Cousins, who improved to 7-10 in the circle, went 5.1 innings. Serena Rodriguez sealed the game pitching 1.2 innings in relief and striking out two batters.

Morgan State finished the game with nine runs on 10 hits and had eight RBI. White and Cousins each had two hits and scored twice. Cousins had two RBI and White added a walk. Garner had a hit, two RBI, two runs and two walks.
