Lady Bears Place 4th At James Brown Invitational

No. 12 Sacred Heart captures tournament title.

FORT MEADE, Md. (Feb. 16, 2025)--
The Morgan State bowling team concluded the 9th James Brown Invitational (JBI) on Sunday with a fourth-place on Sunday at "The Lanes" located on the Fort Meade military base.
 
No. 12 Sacred Heart would capture the tournament title, defeating No. 18 Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) twice in the championship bracket, including 4-1 in the final championship matchup.
 
Mount St. Mary's, Morgan State and Coppin State, rounded out the top five, while Howard finished in sixth and Bowie State placed seventh.
 
Aliza Shirk of Mount St. Mary's won the individual championship, finishing with a total of 1,020 pins for an average of 204.00 for the weekend.
 
Carrington Beaman placed sixth overall to lead the Lady Bears. Beaman had a pinfall of 952 for an average of 190.40, while Kiara Smith placed 10th with 926 pins and an average of 185.20. Beaman would role high games of 206 against Sacred Heart, followed by a 204 game against Bowie State. Smith had a high game of 217 against Bowie State and bowled a 210 against Howard.
 
During Saturday's Traditional play, the Lady Bears went 2-2 on the day. Morgan State began with a loss to Sacred Heart (885-942) then defeated Bowie State (925-773). The hosts then dropped an 899-795 decision to Coppin State, before ending the day with a victory over Howard (960-817).
 
On Sunday, the Lady Bears entered the championship bracket sitting in fourth place. Morgan State would square off against Mount St. Mary's in a best-of-seven match and fell to The Mount, 4-1.
 
Morgan State regrouped and took down rival Coppin State in the second round, 4-2 to work its way back into a rematch with Mount St. Mary's for third place after The Mount dropped a 4-2 decision to Maryland Eastern Shore in the second round.
 
This time around Morgan State and Mount St. Mary's would need all seven games to decide a winner. The Lady Bears trailed 2-0, before winning the next three games to take a 3-2 advantage. Morgan State would fall by one pin (194-193) in the sixth game, as the Mountaineers would force a seventh and decisive game. Mount St, Mary's would prove to be too much, as it defeated Morgan State, 179-127 in the seventh game to claim third place.
 
Morgan State will now head to Dover, Del. for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) No. 2 event (Feb. 22-23), hosted by Delaware State. It will be the final MEAC competition of the regular season.
