FORT MEADE, Md. (Feb. 14, 2025)--The Morgan State bowling team concluded Day 1 of the James Brown Invitational (JBI) in third place. Friday's action at "The Lanes" located on the Fort Meade military base, marked the return of Morgan State's home tournament after a one-year hiatus.
Â
The tournament consists of seven teams including Morgan State and fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) members, Coppin State University, Howard University, and the University Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), along with non-conference foes Bowie State University, Mount St. Mary's, and Sacred Heart University.
Â
To start the first day of competition, Morgan won three Baker games along with a bye match and is currently averaging 180.6 for its Baker sets. The Lady Bears only lost one match to the Hawks of University Maryland Eastern Shore.
Â
"We have been doing better at making single-pin spares and keeping our energy up when we tend to get a little down," said Morgan State head coach Alvin Franklin. "Today everyone was able to hold their own and contribute to the team in a positive and effective way."
Â
Preparing for the rest of the weekend, the Lady Bears started off in a good place. In the first match against Coppin State University, the Lady Bears gained a quick advantage to win four of the five Baker Games with a score of 940-827.
Â
In match two against Howard University, the Lady Bears defeated the Bison in every game of the match. Morgan started the match off slowly with a 185, taking game one by 19-pins. The team then gained a greater lead after game two by 66-pins, which led to a larger lead over the Bison. From there the Lady Bears soared to a win of 872-532.
Â
Game three was a bye-match, which the Lady Bears used to gain a decent pin count for the tournament.
Â
To wind down for the day, Morgan State bowled against Mount St. Mary's and lost the first game of the match and take the back four. The Lady Bears won the match 913-837. Closing out the day the ladies fell to UMES in the final match of the day 880-934.
Â
Saturday, the ladies will return to The Lane's at Fort Meade for five-games of Traditional matches.
