Washington Named To Northeast Classic All-Tournament Team

NEW CASTLE, Del. (Jan. 22, 2025)--The Morgan State bowling team returned to the lanes for the first time in 2025 when they traveled to New Castle, Del., to compete in the Northeast Classic hosted by Sacred Heart.
 
The tournament field consisted of a field of 38 team, 22 of which were ranked by the National Tenpins Coaches Association.
 
The Lady Bears would go 7-6 as a team and finished 20th overall. Nebraska captured the team title with a perfect 13-0 record after defeating Youngstown State (12-1) for the title.
 
Morgan began the tournament going 2-3 in Baker matches. The team fell to fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe North Carolina A&T (1113-864), then defeated Mercyhurst (973-883), before falling to #1 Vanderbilt (1064-1049). Morgan closed out opening day with a loss to #14 Duquesne (1051-938) but regrouped to defeat Long Island (900-773).
 
On Saturday, the team took part in the traditional team games and went 3-2. Morgan started out hot winning its first three matches, earning victories over Adelphi (930-866), 8th ranked Sam Houston State (1096-1079) and MEAC member Maryland Eastern Shore (944-932). The Lady Bears would then end with losses to Central Missouri (856-909) and Maryville (847-1051).
 
Morgan State entered Sunday's Championship bracket seeded 22nd. The Lady Bears would defeat Felician, 4-3 and then defeated Kutztown, 4-3-1. With the win, Morgan advanced to face Merrimack in the final match of the weekend. The Lady Bears would fall to #19 Merrimack, 4-3-1 to finish 20th.  
 
Graduate bowler Cheyenne Washington led the Lady Bears with a 10th place individual finish in singles action. Washington totaled 1,110 pins for an average of 222.0 for the week and was named to the Northeast Classic All-Tournament Second Team.
 
Washington, who rolled back-to-back high games of 267 in an upset win over Sam Houston State, followed by a win over Maryland Eastern Shore, led the tournament in singles until the last two matches.
 
Next up for Morgan State will be a trip home to host the annual James Brown Invitational (Feb. 14-16) in Fort Meade, Md.
