Men’s Track and Field Finishes 7th At MEAC Indoor Championships

NORFOLK, Va. (Feb. 20, 2024) - The Morgan State men's track & field team competed in the three-day long Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Norfolk State won the team competition with 178 points, followed by Howard with 109. Delaware State was third with 100 points, followed by Coppin State (85), and North Carolina Central (67) rounded out the top five of eight teams scoring. South Carolina State finished sixth (54), Morgan was seventh (41 pts) and Maryland-Eastern Shore placed eighth overall with 24 points.

On top of this being the Spartans third consecutive indoor title for the Spartans, it was also their 13th overall.


Sunday, Feb. 18

Senior Adrian Holley led the men in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 21.92 (15th place), followed by sophomore Antonio Sims (22.19) and junior Demier Shipley (22.33). In the 5000-meter run, junior Perry Bennett led the Bears with a 10th place finish with a time of 16:27.20, while junior Jackson Waller placed 14th with a time of 17:15.12. 


Monday, Feb. 19

Morgan placed third in the 4x4000m distance medley, behind Norfolk State (10:12.90) and first-place winner Delaware State (10:11.14). The Bears' crew included Davian Gray, Tarique Gooden, junior Devion Bryant and Perry Bennett.

Sophomore Dante Jackson clocked in with a personal best time of 48.47 to lead the Bears in the 400m preliminaries. Junior Demier Shipley finished with a time of 48.82, followed by sophomore Antonio Sims at 49.11.

Competing in his first major competition as a freshman, Rankin cleared an impressive height of 2.01 meters, earning himself a well-deserved silver medal. It also was a personal best mark for Rankin.

Junior Derick Robinson recorded a fourth place finish in the long jump with a clearance of 7.17 meters.

Perry Bennett and Jackson Waller both put on solid efforts in the 5000-meter run. Perry finished with a time of 16:27.20, securing a 10th place finish. Jackson also gave it his all and completed the race with a time of 17:15.12, earning him a 14th place finish.


Tuesday, Feb. 20

Zackery Dillon made his mark on the final day of competition. The standout stepped up and earned a trip to the podium with a second place finish in the shot put with a toss of 15.77m.

Malik Brown cleared the bar at a height of 4.10m, earning the junior a fourth place finish in the competition.

Morgan sophomore Omari McKenzie placed fifth in the triple jump with a personal best of 14.76 meters. 

Morgan's 4x400m relay team, consisting of four talented athletes - Sims, Jackson, Gooden and Shipley - crossed the tape with a time of 3:16.46, securing a fifth place finish.
