Broadus Names Owsley As Director Of Basketball Operations

BALTIMORE, Md. (August 11, 2023)--Morgan State head men's basketball coach Kevin Broadus has announced Wanika Owsley as the Director of Basketball Operations for the upcoming 2023-24 season.

No stranger to Morgan State basketball, Owsley previously served two stints as an assistant coach with the women's program.

Most recently she spent nine years (2012-21) on the Lady Bears' coaching staff, including the last five as associate head coach.

In her final season with the Lady Bears (2020-21), Owsley was forced to take over at the helm for nine games while head coach Ed Davis addressed health concerns. She would direct Morgan to a 6-3 record, including a 6-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference mark and a season-best five straight wins during the nine games.

Following the season, Owsley would leave Morgan State to become the associate head coach at Detroit for the 2021-22 season.

Owsley had previously spent the 2009-10 season at Morgan State, where she helped the Lady Bears to a 17-13 record and a then school-best third-place regular season finish in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

She would spend the next two seasons as an assistant coach on the Mississippi State women's basketball staff, before returning to Morgan State for the 2012-13 campaign.

Prior to her first stop at Morgan State, Owsley spent three years as the top assistant at Jefferson (Mo.) Community College, going 97-9 during that span. Owsley recruited one national junior college player of the year and four All-Americans. Two of the teams were academic teams of the year which included six academic All-Americans.

Owsley began her collegiate career as a point guard at Southeastern Illinois (Junior) College, helping to lead her team to its first Region 24 championship and an appearance in the NJCAA National Tournament.

She concluded her career at Southeast Missouri State, where she helped the Redhawks to a 46-16 overall record and their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance during her senior season. She was the captain and led both teams in assists.

A native of Indianapolis, Ind., Owsley earned her bachelor's degree in computer science.
