Johnson Wins Gold At East Coast Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 6, 2022) – The Morgan State women's track and field team spent the week in Virginia Beach competing in the 59th East Coast Invitational held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The Lady Bears would produce 18 top-10 finishes, including one individual champion.
 
Morgan State junior Johnelle Johnson highlighted the weekend by capturing gold in the shot put at the 59th East Coast Invitational. A native of Clarendon, Jamaica, Johnson set a new personal best, by throwing a MEAC-best 44 feet, 6.75 inches (13.58 meters) to win the event.
 
Johnson also finished fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 50 feet, 10.25 inches. Jannah Sharpe placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 51 feet, 2.75 inches to record a season best. Terine Lambert came in fifth in the shot put with a mark of 41-7.75.
 
Inara Shell came in fourth in the triple jump with a season best leap of 39 feet, 4.50 inches and Miazziah Rose placed fifth with a jump of 38 feet, 8.25 inches.
 
Ishana Asinor placed fifth in the pole vault with a height of 10 feet. Shell had a mark of 17 feet, 11 inches to place ninth in the long jump.
 
On the track Aaliyah Harris placed second in the 60 meter dash, crossing the line in 7.72 seconds. Destiny Thompson ran a time of 7.83 seconds to come in fourth.
 
Harris would also place third in the 200 meter dash, with an IC4A qualifying time of 24.94 seconds. Thompson came in sixth in a time of 25.44 seconds.
 
Jalissa Emmens ran a time of 2:25.97 to take second in the 800 meter run, while Diamond Moore finished sixth in a time of 2:43.61.
 
Rachel Field crossed the finish line in a time of 19:57.09 to place third in the 5000 meter run. Alliayah Ottley finished fourth in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.76 seconds.
 
Yasmine George finished fifth in the 400 meter dash, running a time of 59.35 seconds, while Michelle Kamara came in eighth in a time of 1:00.18.
 
The Lady Bears indoor track and field team will be in action this weekend when they travel back to Virginia Beach, Va. to compete in the Kenneth Giles Invitational (Friday, Feb. 11-Saturday, Feb. 12), hosted by Norfolk State.
