Keith Jenkins Jr. Named MEAC Special Teams & Rookie Player of the Week

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 17, 2022) – Morgan State freshman Keith Jenkins Jr. has been named both the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week and Specialist of the Week for his efforts in Morgan's Week 7 contest versus North Carolina Central.

North Carolina Central junior quarterback Davius Richard was named the MEAC Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today. Howard University junior defensive back Kenny Gallop, Jr. was named Defensive Player of the Week, and North Carolina Central sophomore Torricelli Simpkins III earned Offensive Lineman of the Week honors.

Jenkins totaled 161 kick return yards (43.0 avg) on five returns. His blazing speed was on full display during his 96-yard touchdown in the second quarter, as he evade multiple Eagle tacklers before finding himself alone as he crossed the plane of the end zone with a track lean into an imaginary finish line.

Jenkins' six-pointer was additionally Morgan's first kick return touchdown in nine (9) years; Tubotein Taylor ran one back from 93 yards for a score against Hampton on Nov. 2, 2013.

The Bears became the first team in the MEAC this season to record a kick return for a touchdown.

Through 6 games, Jenkins leads the MEAC in kick returns currently ranks No. 6 nationally in kickoff returns (32.0 yards/return).

Jenkins becomes the fifth Morgan player to earn MEAC Player of the Week honors this season. Senior running back Alfonzo Graham was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week and junior center Dexter Carr Jr. was named Offensive Lineman of the Week on Oct. 10. Junior linebacker Lawrence Richardson was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19 and graduate student quarterback Carson Baker was named Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 3.

Morgan (2-4, 0-2 MEAC) returns to action for a Saturday night matchup at #12 Delaware (5-1, 3-1 CAA) on Saturday, Oct. 22.  The game will be played at Delaware Stadium in Newark, Delaware. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. EST and will be streamed live by FloFootball and broadcast by WEAA, 88.9FM.
