Men's Track & Field Capture Share of HBCU Showcase Title, Rantin named MVP

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2022) -The Morgan State men's indoor track and field team opened the 2022 portion of their schedule on Saturday at the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Showcase at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York.

The Bears would finish with 11 top-3 finishes, including four event champions to help Morgan State claim a tie with Howard for this year's title with 132 points. In addition, senior sprinter Keon Rantin was named the Most Valuable Performer of the meet.

Maryland Eastern Shore finished with 59 points, Monroe College had 47 points and Prairie View rounded out the top teams with 46 points out of a 10-team field. 
 
In the field events, newcomer Zackery Dillon captured the shot put title with a new personal best mark of 16.40 meters. Sophomore teammate John Purvis took second place with a personal record of 16.06 meters. Kobe-Jordan Rhooms placed second in the long jump with a distance of 6.82 meters, while Lamar Davis finished fourth with a mark of 6.47 meters.

Sophomore Malik Brown recorded a second place height of 3.55 meters in the high jump. Derrick Robinson also placed second in the high jump by recording a leap of 1.80 meters.
 
On the track, Rantin captured the 200 meter dash title in a time of 21.77 and finished second in the 60 meter dash by clocking in with a time of 6.85. Rantin was also a member of the Bears' 4X200 relay team (Adrian Holley, Lamar Davis, Keon Rantin, Duane Kizerthat crossed the line in first place with a time of 1:29.16.  
 
Sophomore speedster Devion Bryant won the 800 meter title in a personal best 1:57.58. 
 
The Bears' 4X200 relay team (Adrian Holley, Lamar Davis, Keon Rantin, Duane Kizercrossed the line in first place with a time of 1:29.16. The 4X400 relay team (Ali Bowens, Tarique Gooen, Devion Bryant, Derick Robinsontook fifth place with a time of 3:30.62.
 
Next up for the Bears will be the Sykes & Sabock Challenge on Jan. 29 in State College, Pennsylvania.
