Men’s Cross Country Finishes Fifth At MEAC Championships

Waller and Jackson named to All-MEAC Team

CARY, N.C., Oct. 29, 2021 – Morgan State's men's cross country team finished in 5th place out of eight teams at the 2021Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Cross Country championship on Friday at WakeMed Soccer Park. 

Morgan State finished with a total of 114 points in the 8k event and had a total time of 2:22:09.

Norfolk State defended their 2019 title and won their 14th title overall. The Spartans totaled 38 points, while Howard was second with 54 points. Rounding out the rest of the team standings were Delaware State (62), North Carolina Central (97), Morgan State (114), Maryland Eastern Shore (156), Coppin State (181) and South Carolina State (184).
 
Spartans coach Kenneth Giles was named the meet's Outstanding Coach.
 
The Spartans' Evans Cheruiyot won the men's individual title and was named Outstanding Performer after running a season-best 25:11.0 over the 8K course. 2019 individual champion Meshack Kipchirchir came in second with a 25:52.5 and Isa Suleiman was third with a 26:14.3.
 
Howard rounded out the top five, with Gavin Williams (26:20.4) and Ayoade Adebiyi (26:23.0) finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
 
Delaware State's Albert Norman ran a 26:37.1 to finish sixth, and Lelei Too gave the Spartans four finishers in the top seven with a 26:46.3.

Morgan State was led by freshman Jackson Waller, who was the first Bear to cross the finish line in a time of 27:00.9 to place 12th, followed by sophomore Justin Alston (27:21.5) in 15th. The pair each recorded personal best times.

Devion Bryant placed 23rd (28:24.7), Nasir Wallace came in 29th in a time of 29:18.2 and Keon Witherspoon finished 35th in a time of 30:11.0. Brandon Jones placed 37th with a time of 30:13.3. Tarique Gooden (32:22.7) and Kobe-Jordan Rhooms (33:19.8) placed 45th and 48th, respectively.
  
The top 15 finishers were named All-MEAC.
