Men’s Track Opens 2020 With Runner-Up Finish at HBCU Battle

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Jan. 10, 2020) -The Morgan State men's indoor track and field team opened the 2020 portion of their schedule on Friday night at the Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Battle at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York.

The Bears would finish with 13 top-5 finishes, including three event champions to help Morgan State secure a second-place finish with 105 points. Howard would claim this year's team title with 121 points, while Maryland Eastern Shore placed third with 92 points and Delaware State finished fourth with 77 points out of a 13-team field. 
 
In the field events, junior standout Kobe-Jordan Rhooms successfully defended his long jump title by shattering last year's mark of 6.92 meters. Today he recorded a personal-best distance of 7.14 meters which currently ranks T-40th in the NCAA. Lamar Davis place second with 6.93 meters on his third jump. Daenah Pressley placed seventh with mark of 6.46 meters.
 
Pressley also placed third in the triple jump by recording a distance of 14.04 meters.
 
Kurt Goodlitt finished second in the shot put with a throw of 15-19 meters, while Brian Duperval took fifth place with a distance of 14.11 meters. 
 
On the track, sophomore Jordan Cofield captured the 60 meter dash title with an IC4A qualifying time of 6.79. Freshman newcomer Almighty Williamson turned in top-10 finishes in the 60 meter hurdles where he placed sixth (8.27), and he finished seventh in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.62 -- just ahead of teammate Jacob Nixon who finished eighth (22.74).
 
Junior speedster Keon Rantin raced to a third place finish in the 400 meter dash with an IC4A qualifying time time of 48.35, while sophomore Brandon James added a fourth place finish with a 49.17.
 
Morgan State's Okonofua twins recorded top-10 finishes in the 800 meter run.  Joshua Okonofua finished fourth (1:59.30) and his brother, Joseph, placed sixth (2:01.05).
 
Keegan Gould turned in a time of 9:21.02 to place fourth in the 3000m run and Justin Alston was sixth with a 9:33.27. Gould also placed fifth in the mile run with a 4:39.10. 
 
The Bears' 4X400 relay team (Keon Rantin, Brandon James, Kobe-Jordan Rhooms, Ra'Mel Manley) crossed the line in first place with an IC4A qualifying time of 3:19.75. The 4X200 relay team (Jacob Nixon, Almighty Williamson, Adrian Holley, Stephen Akinjide) took third place with a time of 1:31.00.
 
Next up for the Bears will be the Gamecock Opener on Jan. 17-18 in Columbia, South Carolina.
