Men’s Track Starts 2019 With Runner-Up Finish at HBCU Battle

NEW YORK, N.Y.-The Morgan State men's indoor track and field team opened the 2019 portion of their schedule on Friday night as the Bears set out to defend their team title from a year ago at the HBCU Battle at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York.

The Bears would finish with 15 top-10 finishes, including two event champions to help Morgan State secure a second-place finish with 90 points. Hampton would claim this year's team title with 112 points, while Bowie State along with Coppin State tied for third with 51 points out of a 13-team field.

Senior Vikarie Elliott finished second in the shot put with a throw of 48-11.75, while Kurt Goodlitt took fourth place with a 47-7.75. Goodlitt also placed fourth in the weight throw college with a toss of 48-.0.75 and Elliott was fifth with a 47-8.5m.

On the track, Keon Rantin secured a third place finish in the  400 meter dash with a season-best time of 48.50 and finished sixth in the 60 meter dash by clocking in with a 6.97. Brandon James also turned in a top-10 finish in the 400 meter with a time of 49.41. and placed third in the 200 meter dash in an IC4A qualifying time of 22.22.

Nahshon Robinson turned in a time of 2:02.70 to place 10^thin the 800 meter run.

The Bears' 4X400 relay team (Kobe-Jordan Rhooms, Brandon James, Ra'Mel Manley, Keon Rantin) finished fifth, crossing the line in a time of 3:23.07.

In the field events, Kobe-Jordan Rhooms captured the long jump title with a leap of 6.92m. Lamar Davis (6.87m) and Daenah Pressley (6.63m) came in second and third place, respectively.

The Bears once again finished 1-2, as Daenah Pressley captured the high jump with a leap of 6'8" (2.03m) and Rhooms finshed runner-up with a 6'6" (1.98m).

Next up for the Bears will be the Wesley Brown Navy Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26 in Annapolis, Md.
