BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 3, 2018) -- Morgan State head cross country/track and field coach Neville Hodge has announced the hiring of Marcus Jones as assistant coach for the men's and women's track and field programs. Jones will also serve as recruiter.
Jones comes to Morgan State after spending the past two seasons as the assistant coach at Delaware State University where he was responsible for the distance runners, pole vault and multi-events.

"Having Mr. Marcus Jones joining our program is a blessing because he brings a wealth of experience from a recruiting and coaching standpoint. One can search the world for a perfect candidate, but when you find the right person you know. During his 30-plus years on the job Jones has coached four NCAA Division I All-Americans, five Junior College All-Americans, and over 70 all-conference and All-Academic student-athletes.
Prior to his time at Delaware State, Jones was an assistant coach at Hampton University from 2014-2016, serving as the recruiting coordinator, mid-distance and vault coach.
During his two-year stint, Hampton would break 11 school records. Jones would coach 11 athletes to All-MEAC indoor honors and five members received All-MEAC outdoor honors.
Jones would help Ce'aira Brown become the Most Outstanding Track Athlete of the MEAC Women's Indoor & Outdoor Championships.
During her senior year, she won four MEAC Indoor Championships in the 800 meter, mile run, 3000 meter and as an anchor on the distance medley team. She added two more championships for outdoor with first-place finishes in the 800 and 1500 meters.
Under Jones' tutelage, Brown won the ECAC 800 meter championship.
In 2015 Jones coached Edose Ibadin to a MEAC Men's Indoor title in the 800 meter, and runner up in the MEAC Outdoor Championship for the same event. Ibadin placed ninth at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships and was selected as a second-team All-American after the event.
In 2016 Jones helped Hampton become the first HBCU to win the prestigious IC4A Indoor Championships. Jones would coach Stanley Davis to an IC4A title in the 800 meter run, while garnering an All-MEAC selection.
Before his tenure at Hampton, Jones enjoyed an eight-year (1992-2000) career at California State University Sacramento. Jones coached 17 women and 10 men to all-conference selections, as well as 15 all-academic honorees. From 1997-2000, Jones oversaw four All-Americans, 16 Big Sky indoor and outdoor champions, 30 All-Conference selections, and 61 all-academic honorees.
Prior to his stint in Sacramento, Jones spent two seasons as an assistant at Scottsdale Community College. In addition to working with sprinters, hurdlers, and multi-event athletes, Jones coordinated housing and academic schedules for his student-athletes. His women's track team finished as the runner-up in the Region 8 ACCAC Championships in 1992. Jones would coach five junior college All-Americans that season.
Throughout his time at Scottsdale, 15 school records fell. His team was ranked in the top 10 for the JCNCAA during 1992 and 1993 seasons.
Jones first coaching job was at his alma mater, Cortez High School (1986-91) where he focused on the distance runners. His runners broke several school records and he coached one All-American. He coached 35 regional champions and several state champions during his tenure.
Jones was a junior college All-American at Phoenix College. In 1988, he ran in the Olympic Trail in the 800 meters. In 1992, he was a semifinalist in the 400 meter.
