Morgan Drops Doubleheader At Howard

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 18, 2025)--Morgan State traveled to the Nation's Capital to take on Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) leader Howard and it was everything but a Good Friday. The host Bison would sweep the doubleheader, defeating Morgan State 5-2 in the opener and 8-0 in six innings at Nationals Youth Academy.

Morgan State (13-25, 9-8 MEAC) saw its four-game winning streak over Howard come to an end, while its current losing skid reached six games. It is also the third MEAC series loss for the Lady Bears and the second straight this season.

Meanwhile, Howard extended its winning streak to a season-long 11 consecutive games, while improving to 22-17 overall and 16-1 in the MEAC.

Game 1
Howard broke up a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Angel Riggins, who led off the inning with a single, later scored on a passed ball to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Bison then added four more runs in the fifth to extend their advantage to 5-0. With bases loaded, Alyssa Vasquez doubled to left center to drive in three runs, giving the Bison a 4-0 lead. Merci Hart's triple to right center, scored Vasquez for the 5-0 advantage.

Morgan State got two runs back in the top of the sixth to pull within 5-2. Gianna Ettore hit a triple to center field, which scored Victoria Fletcher for the Lady Bears' first run of the game. Ettore then scored on a passed ball for the final run of the game to cut the Howard deficit down to three runs.

Ettore and Fletcher both went 1-for-1 with a run scored to pace Morgan State. Ettore added an RBI and a walk, while Fletcher finished with a game-high two walks.

Game 2
Howard's Kenna Higa went 3-for-4 with a game-high three runs and a game-high 3 RBI, while Alyssa Vasquez finished 2-for-4 with a game-high 3 RBI to lead the host Bison past Morgan State, 8-0 in the nightcap.

Jordin King (5-3) got the win for the Bison, limiting Morgan State to just one hit, while going 4.2 innings, issuing five walks and striking out a game-high six batters.

Amber Rivas recorded the lone hit for the Lady Bears. Victoria Fletcher walked a game-high three times.

Howard, which took a 2-0 lead after scoring a run in the first and third innings, upped its advantage to 4-0 when Higa hit a two-run homer to right center in the fifth.

It was 5-0 Howard when Vasquez stepped to the plate with bases loaded for the second time on the day. Just like she did in the opening game Vasquez would clear the bases, this time with a triple to right field to give the hosts an 8-0 lead, thus ending the contest in the sixth.

Next Up: Morgan State and Howard will conclude the series on Saturday, April 19 at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
