NORFOLK, Va. (May 8, 2026)--Morgan State returned to the field on Friday afternoon after the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) softball championship took a day off due to the rain that hit the area all day and put a halt to Thursday's scheduled games.
Â
The fifth-seeded Lady Bears would face their crosstown Baltimore rivals, the sixth-seeded Coppin State Eagles, in an elimination game at TowneBank Softball Field.
Â
Morgan State held a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh inning, but Coppin State scored four runs in the top of the frame to eliminate the Lady Bears, 4-3 in a heartbreaker.
Â
Coppin State (9-26) advances to play No. 2 Delaware State tonight at 8 p.m. in an elimination game. The Eagles ended an eight-game losing skid to Morgan State with their win. It was the first meeting in the MEAC softball championship between the two programs, since Morgan State defeated Coppin State twice in the championship series to capture the 2024 title. Â Â
Â
Morgan State (15-28) broke a scoreless game when
Nia Lewis scored in the third inning when
Millie Cousins reached base on a throwing error.
Â
Gianna Ettore grounded out to short to score
Hunter Newman in the fourth inning for the 2-0 advantage.
Â
Morgan State added to its lead when Lewis scored in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field hit by
Cassie White to increase the lead to 3-0.
Â
The Lady Bears maintained the three-run lead and appeared to be in control heading into the top of the seventh, as Cousins had held the Eagles to only one hit at that point, which came in the first inning.
Â
Behind Giselle Ulloa being hit by pitch and a Morgan State throwing error batter, Coppin had bases loaded in the top of the seventh with one out. Natasha Arroyo drew a walk to score Ulloa, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Xzylia Maravilla followed with a walk to make it a 3-2 game with still one out.
Serena Rodriguez entered the game in relief with bases still loaded and Coppin State's Brooklyn Lee-Scott singled up the middle to even the score at 3-3.
Â
Coppin State would score the eventual game winner when Cameran Corbett reached on a fielder's choice, but another throwing error on Morgan State in the inning allowed Arroyo to score the Eagles' fourth run on the play.
Â
Debra Hyde (3-7) went the distance for Coppin State in the circle, surrendering three runs on seven hits and a strikeout. Corbett and Lee-Scott accounted for both of the Eagles' hits in the game.
Â
Alison Keener led Morgan State with a game-high two hits, while Lewis scored a game-high two runs and had a stolen base. Cousins (10-12) struck out a game-high three batters and allowed just one run in 6.1 innings pitched.
