Freshman
Hometown: Morningside, Md.
Major: Business

Ga'moni Gaskin, a freshman at Morgan State, has made a remarkable debut in her inaugural season with the Acrobatics and Tumbling team. Hailing from Morningside, Maryland, Gaskin has not only showcased her athletic prowess but has also excelled academically, maintaining an impressive 4.0 GPA last semester.

Gaskins traces her athletic journey to her early days as a cheerleader. From the tender age of three, Gaskins honed her skills in the world of cheerleading, that would later lead her to a new and exciting chapter in her athletic career.

As a young athlete, Gaskins, had never encountered the sport of Acro until she met Morgan head coach Regina Smith. Inspired by the coach's vision, Gaskins embraced the unknown, becoming a trailblazer for the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) Division I Acrobatics and Tumbling team.

Initially, Johnson had numerous offers for cheerleading scholarships. However, the allure of Acro proved irresistible.

Gaskins's cheerleading journey began with the Watkins Hornets, a Little League football team. After her stint with the Hornets, she moved on to Crimson Heat All-Star, a more competitive cheerleading organization. Gaskins continued to hone her skills at Power Athletics, another All-Star program, before finding a home with the Maryland Twisters. While in high school, she cheered for her Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School, showcasing her athleticism and dedication both on and off the field.

Student Life

  • What is your major? - I am currently a Business major with a passion for baking. I have realized that my true calling lies in the culinary arts. My aspirations to become a chef have led me to consider transitioning to the Entrepreneurship major.
  • What is your favorite course you have taken?- English, because my teacher breaks everything down and it's not that hard.
  • What is some advice you would give to incoming freshmen? - Just stay focused. People come thinking it's all a party, but get your work done. I put my work before anything, even Acro. So go to Study Hall or even take time out of your day to get your work done.
  • How do you feel about coming to college? I was just scared for the social part. I'm more of an introvert, and I felt like I was going to be alone. However, I quickly found a source of support and camaraderie in my teammates. I have been able to forge some strong friendships.
  • What is your favorite experience here at Morgan?- ACRO! Acro has given me and my teammates opportunities for a lot of great experiences.  One such example occurred when we were featured in a news interview. Another highlight was our invitation to visit the White House. Experiences like these have instilled a sense of pride that we will cherish forever.
  • How was the White House experience?- Just standing outside... we got everybody's attention. Stunting outside was the best part! We were able to show off our skills and people wanted to take pictures with us!

Pop Culture

  • What social media platforms do you use the most and don't use?-  I use Instagram the most. Everyone is on Instagram. The app I don't use is Facebook.
  • What is your favorite TV show and movie you will always watch? - Law and Order Special Victims and Missing is a movie and show I will watch.
  • What is one place you will visit? Hawaii
  • Where do you want to live after you graduate - I want to stay in Maryland for like 1 to 2 years so I can open my businesses and have a franchise down here. I want it to go to Georgia or Houston.
  • What is your favorite home-cooked meal? - Turkey wings, cabbage and macaroni.

Sports

  • What are your pre-game rituals? - I just put my headphones in and tune everything out.
  • What team are you looking forward to playing next season? - Presbyterian, because I feel like we could beat them.
  • Favorite part about competing in Acrobatics and Tumbling? - Our coaches saying that I am going to be multiple events.
  • What is the highest skill you have? -  I would say my full is my highest tumbling skill and my favorite.
  • At what age did you realize that tumbling was your strong suit? - I would say middle school, because I was cheering and I would be doing Level 4 skills while my friends were still on Level 1.

Miscellaneous

  • What is your favorite memory from the team? -  When we had one of the girls pretend to be a pastor at practice.
  • How do you feel about the team being the first D1 HBCU Acrobatics and Tumbling Team? - It was cool, because people back home swear I am famous.
  • One Message for your teammates? - I just want to say keep pushing. We're going to get better and keep your grades up! I love you all and I'm going to miss you all  over the summer!
