OWINGS MILLS, Md. (March 9, 2024)--
The Morgan State acrobatics and tumbling completed a week of firsts by defeating Stevenson University on Saturday afternoon at Owings Mills Gymnasium. The Lady Bears' first away game was against the Stevenson University Lady Mustangs in Owings Mills. This is the team's first win in program and school history.

Morgan State defeated the Stevenson Mustangs (225.025-195.855). The win moves the Lady Bears to 1-2 overall on the season, while Stevenson falls to 0-3. The Lady Bears lost (230.505-255.690) to Iona and (220.770-262.580) to Quinnipiac at the start of the season.

The Lady Bears outscored Stevenson in the first three events of the meet. The Lady Bears began the meet by establishing a lead by intense synchronization and pace in the compulsory event. The acro event followed, which went very well given that it was their first meeting on an opposing team's mat, but they were faced with competitive coordinating from Stevenson despite their team being significantly smaller.

They concluded the first half of the meeting with the pyramid heat. The ladies got this event off to a good start with the inverted pyramid. The heat's start total was the lowest for its event, a strategy that paid off for the team because the subsequent two heats were the most-hardest to retain; each team had to hold the positions of each tier for at least 3 seconds. Nonetheless, the Lady Bears maintained their lead, bringing the meet total to 81.300-71.750.

 Totals  Morgan State  Stevenson
 Compulsory  31.300  23.350
 Acro  22.850  21.800
 Pyramid  27.150  26.600
 Toss  21.050  22.050
 Tumble  50.475  37.925
 Team  72.200  64.130

Even though Stevenson outscored the Lady Bears 22.050-21.050 in the toss event, Morgan was determined to win.

The tumble event after the trio passed displayed a lot of emotion. There was lots of emotion shown in the tumbling after the trio passed.

"I was filled with happiness and relief. I'm just coming off of a bad ankle sprain, so I haven't been tumbling these past weeks leading up to Stevenson," said Mia Taylor, a freshman top and tumbler. "I've never done this pass before. So, when I completed the pass I was just crying because I was relieved that I completed it."

The Lady Bears' performance in the team event appeared to reflect the enthusiasm of the audience. Adding another lead to close the meet, bringing the total to (225.025-195.855)

As the season progresses, we should expect to see the team get better.

"We wake up at five a.m. every day to come to practice and work hard, and today's victory meant everything." We want to succeed and demonstrate to everyone that it is possible to start from zero and still end up on top," said Taylor, who was named player of the meet.

Morgan State head coach Regina Smith said, "we were definitely anticipating this when we knew that if we came in and executed what we needed to do, we would pull off that win. To get the best result for the team, we will need to correct all of these neutral penalties before facing Presbyterian in the next week.

On Friday, March 22, 2024, the Lady Bears will travel to Clinton, South Carolina, to take on Presbyterian. Watch the meet live on ESPN+ starting at 7 p.m. EST.
