Morgan State Acrobatics And Tumbling Holds First Look At Orange & Blue Meet

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 22, 2024)--The Morgan State Acrobatics and Tumbling team made its long-awaited debut on Monday evening as the school's 16th athletic program, as it held an Orange & Blue Meet in front of the Morgan State community at Hill Field House. The Lady Bears finished with a score of 211.150 out of a possible 300.00 points.
 
"This is a historic mark being that we are the first Division I Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) institution and all minority team," said Morgan State head coach Regina Smith. "This is something that is going to level up for HBCU in the future and we are excited to be the breaking point."
 
The sport of acrobatics and tumbling is comprised of six events: Compulsory, Acro, Pyramid, Toss, Tumbling and Team event. Each event has anywhere from three, four or six heats.
 
The Lady Bears started off the meet with a score of 25.75 out of 40 in the Compulsory event. Their highest score in this event was 8.40 out of 10 points in the toss heat.  
 
In the acro events, the team scored 22.08 out of 30, with their highest score of 8.40 in Heat 1 (5 element). 
 
At halftime, the Lady Bears had a score of 69.10. During the pyramid events, the team showcased their strengths and teamwork, with their fellow teammates cheering them on from the sidelines.
 
In the final heat of tumbling with an open pass, Kayla Bryant showcased her exceptional skill set and earned an impressive score of 9.05 out of 9.90 achieving a personal best. 
 
"We wanted to make sure everything hit and we wanted to show Morgan something that was clean and get fans excited about our actual inaugural meet," said Smith.
 
The Morgan State Acrobatics and Tumbling team will officially begin its inaugural 2024 campaign on Saturday, Feb. 10, when the Lady Bears welcome Quinnipiac to Hill Field House for their home and season opener at 2 p.m.
