Morgan State Signs 6-foot-4 Guard Amarhie Simpkins

BALTIMORE, Md. (May 26, 2023) — Morgan State's basketball program has added Amahrie Simpkins to Kevin Broadus' 2023 recruiting class.

The versatile 6-foot-4 guard from Brooklyn, New York spent the past two seasons at D1 JUCO Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

Under head coach John Ball, Simpkins led the Harcum Bears averaging 18.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and shot 55 percent from the field last season. At the National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas, the Bears won their first two games of the tournament over Danville Area (79-75) and in an exciting come-from-behind win against Johnson County (60-55) but lost in the Final Four to Richard Bland (79-76 OT). Harcum posted a 26-4 overall record, including an unprecedented 18-game winning streak and  finished the season as the fourth-ranked team in the country.

In 2021-22, Simpkins appeared in 34 games and helped lead the Bears to the National Tournament quarterfinals. He averaged 7.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. He scored in double-figures 12 times, including a season high 21 points in a game against Cecil College.

Simpkins also spent four productive seasons at Brooklyn Collegiate while developing into one of the top scorers in the PSAL.

Simpkins averaged 15.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game in 14 contests during the 2019-20 regular season. He added an average of 16.3 points, 7.8 boards, and 3.8 helpers in four games in the playoffs before the New York City Board of Education (BOE) shut down the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Simpkins will join a Morgan State squad coming off of a 15-16 campaign in which they went 7-7 in MEAC play to reach the conference tournament.  The Bears were tough at home in Baltimore, going 10-2 at Hill Field House.

Simpkins joins 6-foot-4 Kiran Oliver,  6-foot-11 forward Christian Oliver, 6-foot-9 forward Allen Udemadu, 6-foot-7 forward Myles Thompson and 6-2 guard Wynston Tabbs as part of the Bears' 2023-24 recruiting class.

Simpkins joins an MSU team that returns veteran guards Kamron Hobbs (8.4 ppg) and Will Thomas (8.9 ppg). The Bears lost five seniors Isaiah Burke (18.7 ppg), Malik Miller (17.5 ppg), Lewis Djonkam (7.9 ppg), Ty Horner (2.6) and Collin Nnamene (2.2 ppg).
