SETTING THE STAGE
• The Morgan State Bears are set to clash with the Cheney University of Pennsylvania in the season opener Monday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Hill Field House, with the game broadcast live on the Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN.com).

• Reigning MEAC Coach of the Year Kevin Broadus will lead the Bears into the upcoming season, with All-MEAC guard Alfred Worrell Jr. and newcomer point guard Keith Richard named to the conference's Preseason Watch List.

• Alfred Worrell Jr. emerged as Morgan State's leading scorer during the 2025-26 season, averaging 17.4 points and 3.8 rebounds in 30 games, including 26 starts. He scored in double figures 23 times, with 13 performances of 20 or more points. Worrell shot 38.8% from the field, 36.3% from three-point range and a MEAC-best 88.5% from the free-throw line. He ranked fourth in the conference in scoring and second in three-point shooting percentage. He earned All-MEAC recognition and BOXTOROW All-American honors last season. He was also selected to the 2026 Black College Sports Page "Baad Team."

• Keith Richard, a 6-foot guard from Dallas, Texas, joins Morgan State from South Plains College, where he started 19 of 27 games. He averaged 10.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 25.5 minutes per game, shooting 41 percent from the field and 39 percent from three-point range. His addition provides the Bears with another backcourt option heading into a demanding 2026-27 campaign.

• Morgan State's biggest challenge is replacing the production and leadership of All-MEAC performer Elijah Davis, along with guards Rob Lawson and Walter Peggs Jr. The trio was instrumental in Morgan State's run to second place in the MEAC standings. Davis was one of the conference's top point guards, averaging 13.8 points, 5.9 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game.

• The Bears will also compete in the inaugural 410 Invitational powered by Under Armour, a planned multi-year event featuring men's and women's basketball teams from Morgan State, UMBC, Towson, and Loyola. The men's competition begins Nov. 12, when Morgan State travels to UMBC.

SCOUTING CHENEY
• Cheney University of Pennsylvania, a Division II member, is led by head coach Jordan Bushrod, who enters his second season as the Wolves' head basketball coach. Bushrod led Cheney to a 6–19 record, marking the program's highest win total since the 2019–20 campaign and laying the foundation for its long-term resurgence.

• Cheney completed the 2025-26 season with a 10-18 record and won three of their last four down the stretch.

• Last season, the Wolves averaged 74.3 points per game on 40 percent shooting from the field and 30 percent from behind the arc.  Cheney also averaged 10.4 assists and 8.3 steals per game.

• Fifth-year guard S.J. Hutchinson II (Allentown, Pa. / Wheeling Univ.) returns to the Wolves' squad after averaging 13.7 points per game and shooting 38 percent from the field and 28 percent from beyond the arc. Hutchinson scored a season-high 23 points with seven boards in 29 minutes versus Virginia State on Jan. 5, 2026.

• The Wolves have three players from the DMV area: junior guard Tyler Donald (Capitol Heights, Md. / Friendship Collegiate Academy / Prince George's C.C.); junior forward Malik Acker (Newport News, Va. / Atlantic Coast HS / College of Southern Maryland); and senior guard Amare Curtis (Washington, D.C. / Coolidge HS/Harford C.C.).

THE SERIES
• The Bears lead the series 2-0.

• November 9, 2023 — Myles Thompson had 19 points and five rebounds off the bench, and the Bears scored 48 in the paint in a 100-52 win over Cheyney on Thursday night. Thompson, a redshirt-senior transfer from Saint Francis (Pa.), finished with a game-high 19 points and five rebounds to lead five Bears in double figures. Wynston Tabbs scored 17 points (5-10 FT) with five boards, five assists, and two blocks in 21 minutes. The win counted in the boxscore for the Bears, while the game was recorded as an exhibition for the Wolves.

• December 4, 2024 — Senior forward Will Thomas poured in a career-high 32 points to help Morgan defeat Cheney University of Pennsylvania 124-57 at Hill Field House. Thomas, a Preseason All-MEAC First Team selection, shot an efficient 12-for-15 from the floor, including a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point territory and 4-for-4 from the stripe. Junior guard Rob Lawson matched a career-high with 18 points (4-5 3FG) off the bench with six assists in 21 minutes.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BEARS
NORFOLK, Va. (March 11, 2026) - Alfred Worrell Jr. and Elijah Davis each scored 18 points, but No. 2 seed Morgan State fell to No. 7 seed Delaware State, 75–70, in overtime in the MEAC quarterfinals. Miles Webb also scored 18 points to lead the Hornets. Webb hit a pair of free throws with 25 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 60–60 and force overtime. In the extra period, Delaware State outscored the Bears 15–10 to pull off the upset victory.

65 POINTS, OR FEWER
In his eighth season as Morgan's head coach, Broadus has guided the Bears to a 30-8 (.789) record when the Bears have held their opposition to 65 points or fewer. Morgan was 5-2 during the 2023-24 season (allowing 65 or fewer points), and was mirrored in 2022-23 with another 5-2 record. They went 4-0 in 2021-22, went 3-1 in 2020-21, and were 9-3 in 2019-20.

UP NEXT
The Bears will face the Virginia University of Lynchburg on the hardwood on Wednesday, November 4th.  The game is set to tip-off at 7 p.m. at Hill Field House.
