NORFOLK, Va., May 11, 2023 – The Morgan State men's track & field concluded the finale of the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Dick Price Stadium on Norfolk State University's campus on Thursday.
Morgan State registered a score of 45 points to place eighth in team scoring, while host Norfolk State won the championship with 188.50 points, completing a yearly sweep of the conference running titles for the Spartans – This year marked NSU's second consecutive yearly sweep of the MEAC cross country, indoor and outdoor titles.
Howard finished as runners-up with 176.50 points and Delaware State finished third with 97 points, Maryland Eastern Shore (91) and North Carolina Central (80), Coppin State (61) and South Carolina State (52) rounded out the team standings.
Morgan's freshman Omari McKenzie placed fifth in the triple jump. The Montego Bay, Jamaica product finished with a distance of 14.40 meters. Howard's Chase Drewery took gold with a mark of 15.43 meters, followed by Norfolk State's Isaac Haywood (14.62m) and Howard's Kyle Fisher (14.57m).
Morgan State's 4x100-meter relay team, comprised of Jadon Ra-Akbar, Adrian Holley, Ali Bowens and Antonio Sims finished in sixth place with a time of 41.75. Howard took the gold by winning the relay in 40.00 – besting Norfolk State by just .02 seconds.
Junior Davian Gray ran a time of 4:02.49 to take sixth place in the 1500 meter run. Norfolk State took the top three spots as Regan Kimtai took gold for the Spartans and his teammates Victor Jumo and Gidion Sigei took the silver and bronze, respectively.
Junior Duane Kizer placed seventh in the men's 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.52. Howard's Dylan Beard crossed the tape for the win with a MEAC record time of 13.43, followed by Delaware State's Tayshaun Chisholm (13.65) and Howard's Zachary Hawkins (13.92).
Junior Tarique Gooden placed fifth in the 400 meter hurdles by crossing the finish line with a time of 54.54. Delaware State's Alonzo Sims Jr. (52.57) beat out Howard's Zachary Hawkins (52.70) for the gold.
Sophomore Jackson Waller turned a seventh place finish in the 5000 meter run with a time of 16:01.35, followed by junior Justin Alston who placed 12th (18:01.42).
The Bears' 4x400 meter relay team, comprised of Tarique Gooden, Antonio Sims, Emmanuel Ibeh and Dante Jackson finished in seventh place with a time of 3:18.88. Maryland Eastern Shore won gold by breaking the tape in 3:09.19, just ahead of Coppin State who posted a time of 3:09.58.
Junior Malik Brown added to MSU's medal count on the final day by placing second in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.82 meters (12'06.25").
Junior John Purvis finished 10th in the javelin with a throw of 42.11 meters. Howard's Mekhi Abbott had a distance of 61.78 meters to capture gold. North Carolina Central's Matthew Swepson placed second (55.61m) and Maryland Eastern Shore's James Perkins finished in third place (53.29m).
Norfolk State's Kenneth Giles was again named Outstanding Coach, while the Spartan's Regan Kimtai, who won three gold medals during the meet, was named Outstanding Runner and North Carolina Central's Matthew Swepson repeated as the Outstanding Field Performer.
The top three finishers in each event were named All-MEAC.
