BALTIMORE, Md., (March 25, 2023)--For the second time in two weeks and the third time in her career,
Anaya Hunte has thrown a no-hitter. The junior pitcher tossed seven strikeouts in seven innings to earn the complete game victory, as the Lady Bears defeated Norfolk State, 7-0 in the opener of their three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series at Lois T. Murray Field.
Hunte, who in last Saturday's MEAC opener pitched a perfect game, was one out away from recording her third perfect game, when Norfolk State's Kenna Higa drew a two-out walk on a 3-2 count in the top of the seventh inning to break up the perfect game bid.
The win was the Lady Bears' third shutout victory in their first four MEAC contests this season. Morgan State has outscored its opponents, 27-1 in league play.
Morgan State (13-11, 4-0 MEAC) wasted no time getting started, as it put up a four spot in the first inning.
Mia Ewell doubled down the left field line to score
Nia Lewis and
Victoria Fletcher.
Madison Nunez followed with a double to bring home
Ky'Anah Lake and Ewell to increase the lead to 4-0.
Nunez would account for the Lady Bears' next two runs, as she grounded out on a sacrifice bunt to score
Chandler Mitchell in the third inning and reached base on an error in the fifth inning, which allowed Fletcher to score and give the hosts a 6-0 lead.
The Lady Bears ended the scoring in the sixth inning when Fletcher doubled to center field to score
Sarah Tuzinski for the 7-0 victory.
Fletcher went 3-for-4 with two runs and a RBI to lead the Lady Bears, while Nunez finished 1-for-2 with a game-high 3RBIs. Ewell was 1-for-3 with a run and 2RBIs.
Morgan State and Norfolk State resume the series on Sunday, March 26 with a doubleheader beginning at noon. Can't make it out to Lois T. Murray Field? Catch the action live on
