Men’s Track and Field Finishes 8th At MEAC Indoor Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Feb. 21, 2023) -- The Morgan State men's track & field team competed in the three-day long Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Norfolk State won the team competition with 180 points, followed by Howard with 109. Delaware State was third with 76 points, followed by Coppin State (76), and North Carolina Central (62.50) rounded out the top five of eight teams scoring. South Carolina State finished sixth (53.50), Maryland Eastern Shore was seventh (45 pts) and Morgan placed eighth overall with 41 points.

On top of this being back-to-back indoor titles for the Spartans, it's their 12th overall.

The Morgan men's team earned seven top-eight finishes at the championships, highlighted by a first place finish from junior John Purvis in the shot put. The Berlin, New Jersey product hit a distance of 16.52 meters, the winning distance just .01 meters ahead of second-place Christopher Johnson of Delaware State.

 

Sophomore Malik Brown earned a second place finish in the pole vault with a mark of 4.00 meters.

Freshman Omari McKenzie and sophomore Joshua Belinga kept up the scoring for the Bears in the triple jump. McKenzie placed fourth by recording a distance of 14.28 meters, while Belinga posted sixth place finished with a mark of 14.20 meters.  

The Bears foursome of Nasir Wallace, Tarique Gooden, Devion Bryant and Davian Gray took fourth place in the distance medley relay by clocking in with a time of 10.24.58.

Morgan put together a sixth-place effort in the 4×400m relay, posting an IC4A qualifying time of 3.19.63 with a foursome of Antonio SimsTarique GoodenAdrian Holley and Ali Bowens.
