BALTIMORE, Md. (Aug. 10, 2022)--Morgan State head volleyball coach
Xiomara Ortiz has announced the hiring of
Maegan Coleman as assistant coach.
Â
Coleman comes to Morgan State after spending the 2021 season as the head coach at Cheyney University.
Â
"Meagan is a great addition to the program. We share similar philosophies on student-athlete development, personal and professional growth," said Ortiz. "We had the opportunity to get connected through the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and work with each other at camps."
Â
"I feel she brings a balance to my coaching style where she has experience as a hitter and blocker as well as helping to build up programs. I know that Maegan will be a great addition to our staff, bringing her expertise into the gym and on the recruiting trail."
Â
Prior to taking over the head duties at Cheyney, Coleman spent the 2020 campaign as an assistant coach at West Alabama and served a year as head coach at Lamar Community College.
Â
While at LCC, Coleman quickly built the Runnin' Lopes program with the recruitment of 10 players in-state, out of state and internationally within a hiring date of two months before the season and raised $5,000 to pay for travel and other expenses. Â
Â
During the 2019 season, Lamar ranked 13th in the nation for block solos, 32nd in digs, and 37th in service aces.
Â
Before heading to LCC, she served as the head coach of the volleyball program with the Plano (Texas) Sport Authority from 2017-2019 where she organized, managed and supervised athletic activities, practice sessions, and tournaments
Â
Coleman served as the graduate/assistant coach for the University of Arkansas at Monticello in 2016-17. She saw success while at UAM as an assistant coach, helping guide the Blossoms to school records in conference wins, attack percentage, digs and digs per set. She also played a role in two players being named all-conference and receiving the AVCA Academic Team Award.
Â
Prior to UAM, Coleman had a stop at Western Texas College as an assistant coach, helping the Lady Westerners to a runner up finish at the regional tournament and having three players earn first-team all-conference honors.
Â
Coleman's first coaching experience came while volunteering with the Prairie View A&M University volleyball team, and club teams in the Texas area, which included Texas One, Blocksport, and the 360 Volleyball Club.
A native of Lancaster, Texas, Coleman began her collegiate career at Tyler Junior College, before concluding her playing career at Prairie View A&M. As a middle blocker and outside hitter at Prairie View A&M, she helped the Panthers win two Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division titles.Â
 Â
Coleman was awarded the Student-Athlete Academic Award three times, and was the first student-athlete from Prairie View A&M to earn a Nike Internship in one of their corporate offices in Culver City, California. She graduated from Prairie View with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 2014 and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
