Morgan State And Howard Split Saturday’s Doubleheader

Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader against Beltway rival Howard on Saturday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field. The Lady Bears overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat Howard, 4-3 in the opener, while Howard returned the favor with a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.
 
Morgan State improved to 15-12, 6-2 MEAC, while Howard upped its record to 13-19, 4-3 MEAC.
 
The two will conclude their three-game series on Sunday, April 3 at noon.
 
Game 1
Morgan State struck first when Victoria Fletcher singled up the middle to score Deborah Hamilton for the 1-0 lead in the second inning.
 
Howard would score the next three runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Kalita Dennis doubled to right field to score Xzarria Simmons in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Bison added two more runs in the fifth on a double by Natalie Davila to score Jade Greene and Alyssa Vasquez singled up the middle to score Camille Navarro for the 3-1 lead in the fifth.
 
The Lady Bears evened the score at 3-3 with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth. Cayla Sweazie doubled down the left field line to score Madison Nunez for the first run and Tayven Rousseau walked with bases loaded to score Danielle Jason.
 
The score remained tied until the seventh when Rousseau doubled to left field to score Asia Thomas for the game winner.
 
Melissa Paz earned the win and improved to 3-2, while Analise De La Roca fell to 7-5 on the season.
 
Paz recorded three strikeouts, surrendered a run on four hits and two walks in 2.1 innings pitched. Starting pitcher Anaya Hunte threw a game-high six strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
 
Nunez and Thomas each went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored to lead Morgan State. Rousseau had a game-high two RBIs and walked twice.
 
Game 2
It was a scoreless game until the fourth inning when Howard's Dennis tripled to right field to score Navarro.
 
Morgan State responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame when Nunez singled through the left side to score Hamilton and Jason, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead.
 
The Lady Bears held on to the one-run advantage until the Bison scored three runs in the seventh to for what would be the game winning runs. With bases loaded, Ayana Sallee doubled to center field to bring in three runs, giving the visiting Bison the 4-2 win.
