Softball Drops Series Finale To Howard; Loses First MEAC Series Since 2019

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 3, 2022)—The Morgan State softball team had gone 10 consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series without losing a series dating back to the 2019 season.

During that stretch the Lady Bears would win eight series outright and had two series ties against Maryland Eastern Shore (4/19-20/19) and last season against Howard (4/10-11/21). The 2020 season was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Morgan State, the defending MEAC Champions entered Sunday's series finale against Beltway rival Howard needing a win to keep its streak alive, after splitting the doubleheader on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Lady Bears the visiting Bison had other plans, as they would defeat Morgan State, 4-1 on a cold and wet Sunday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field to win the series.

The loss would mark the Lady Bears' first series loss against MEAC opposition since dropping two-of-three games to Norfolk State in 2019.

Morgan State fell to 15-13 overall and 6-3 in the MEAC, while Howard improved to 14-19, 5-3 in the MEAC.

After a 23-minute rain delay, the game finally got underway and the third inning provided all the action.

Kalita Dennis tripled to right field to score Jade Greene and Natalie Davila to give the visiting Bison a 2-0 lead. Two batters later Alyssa Vasquez homered down the left field line to score Dennis and double Howard's lead to 4-0 in the top of the third.

Morgan State would get a run back in the bottom half of the third, when Mia Ewell flied out to left field to score Danielle Jason to make it a 4-1 game.

The Lady Bears threatened in the fourth inning when they had bases loaded with just one out, but was unable to take advantage of a golden opportunity and plate any runs.

Both teams finished with four hits in the game. Morgan State committed two errors, while Howard had one.

Morgan State starting pitcher Victoria Fletcher tossed a game-high three strikeouts in the loss.

Howard's Analise De La Roca also struck out three batters, while walking five in three innings of relief to earn the win.

Next Up
Morgan State returns to non-conference play on Wednesday, April 6 when it travels to Emmitsburg, Md. to take on Mount St. Mary's in a doubleheader. First pitch is at 2 p.m.
