BALTIMORE, Md.
 (Jan. 10, 2020) – Morgan State University senior linebacker Ian McBorrough was named to the 22ndAnnual Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team, the organization announced Friday, Jan. 10.
            
McBorrough was one of just 53 players selected from a pool of over 110 applicants. 
 
The 2019 Academic All-Star Team is comprised of student-athletes from 33 different institutions, representing 12 different conferences. Leading the way was the Missouri Valley Conference, which placed nine student-athletes on the Academic All-Star Team. The Missouri Valley Conference was followed closely by the Colonial Athletic Association and the Big Sky Conference, which tallied six recipients each.
 
McBorrough, who is the first player from Morgan State to be honored on the team, was joined by fellow MEAC players Justin Cates (North Carolina A&T State) and Daeshawn Stephens (North Carolina A&T State).
 
Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) institutions are eligible for the award. Each of the nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. They must have reached their second year of athletics and academic standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum of one full academic year at the nominated institution. They must also have participated in 50 percent (50 percent) of the games played at their designated position.
 
"One of the more difficult responsibilities of the FCS ADA is selecting the annual Academic All-Star Team," stated current FCS ADA President Kent Haslam, director of athletics at the University of Montana. "The reason being is there are so many worthy candidates. This year was no different. The accomplishments of this group of young men are truly remarkable. They excel on the field, in the classroom and in their communities. I congratulate them, along with all those who have provided critical support along the way, on this tremendous honor."
 
A senior Business Management major, McBorrough boasts a 3.29 grade point average. He has also excelled on the field where he led the Bears as one of the league's premier linebackers. 
 
The Essex, Md. product finished the 2019 season by leading the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) with a career-high 110 total tackles and he also ranked T-11th in tackles for loss (10). He also had five fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles and two sacks. 

McBorrough, who was named to the 2019 All-MEAC First Team, finished his collegiate career with 252 total tackles, which ranks fifth-place all-time behind Elvis Franks (348; 1975-79), Albert Gamble (292; 2000-03), Cody Acker (272; 2011-14) and Rico Kennedy (262; 2016-19).

McBorrough was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in the Bears 22-16 upset win over #14 North Carolina A&T State on Nov. 9th. He had an all-around outstanding game and collected a game-high 12 tackles (11 solo) and a pair of tackles for loss in the Bears victory. 

McBorrough was also a finalist for the STATS FCS Doris Robinson Scholar-Athlete Award, a semifinalist for the 2019 William V. Campbell Trophy, in addition to being a nominee for the  2019 Watch List for the Black College Football Player of the Year Award, the Black College Football Hall of Fame (BCFHOF). 
 
His preseason accolades also include being named to the 2019 Preseason All-MEAC First Team and Phil Steele's Preseason All-MEAC First Team.

Off the field, McBorrough is heavily involved with the Big Brothers Program at Holabird Middle School. He has also volunteered at Good Samaritan Hospital, assisted in food drives and he volunteered at the MEAC Football Youth Clinic held at the Salvation Army Kroc Community Center in Norfolk, Virginia.
 
A member of the 2019 MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic Team, McBorrough is pursuing his bachelor's degree in business administration and is scheduled to graduate in May (2020) and is currently carrying a 3.288 GPA. He was also a 2018 Academic All-MEAC selection and has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for four semesters (Fall '17, Spring '18, Fall '18, Spring '19).
