2019 Morgan State Football Opponent Preview: Bowling Green State

BALTIMORE, Md. (July 8, 2019) – The Morgan State University football team will face BCS-member Bowling Green State in the 2019 season-opener on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Doyt Perry Stadium.  This is the first of a series of previews of the Bears' non-conference opponents.

Quick 2019 Preview
Head coach Scott Loeffler enters his first season at the helm of the Bowling Green football program. Loeffler's coaching career, which spans back to his time as a student assistant at Michigan during the 1996 season, includes stops as Michigan, Central Michigan, Florida, Temple, Auburn, Virginia Tech and Boston College. He also spent a year coaching quarterbacks for the Detroit Lions. The Falcon's top returners are RB Andrew Clair, OL Jack Kramer and DB Jerry McBride III.

2018 Season: 3-9 (2-6 MAC)
Jarret Doege led the Falcons' offense in 2018. The 6-3 sophomore threw for 2,660 yards with 27 touchdowns (ranked T-18th nationally) and completed 62.2 percent of his passes. Bowling Green's ground game was led by sophomore RB Andrew Clair who finished the season with 702 yards (5.2) on 135 carries. Including 5 TDs.  Senior LB Brandon Harris led the defense with 131 tackles (76 solo) and redshirt senior DB Marcus Milton recorded three interceptions with 46 stops. The Falcons completed the season by winning two of its last three contests. 

The Matchup
The game will be the second matchup between the schools. The Falcons posted a 58-13 victory over the Bears on Sept. 10, 2011 at Doyt Perry Stadium. Robert Council, a redshirt-freshman who received the first start of his career, completed 4-of-19 passes for 32 yards and gained 51 yards on the ground.  Council's single glaring mistake was when he had his pass intercepted by Jerry "Boo Boo" Gates on the third play of MSU's second drive. The Falcons' hung 572 yards on the Bears defense, 268 on the ground. Matt Schilz finished 16-for-23 for 258 yards with five touchdowns and one interception in just over two quarters of work. He threw 4 of his 5 touchdowns in the first quarter.

Fun Fact
☑️ Sophomore DB Caleb Biggers is from Prince Frederick, Maryland and played two years of varsity football at Calvert Hall College HS for head coach Donald Davis. He played in the final 10 games of the 2018 season, starting each of the last four contests.

☑️ Since competing in the 2013 MAC Championship game on Dec. 6, 2013, seven individuals have coached the Falcons, three with interim titles.

☑️ Notable Bowling Green coaches include College Football Hall of Fame members Doyt Perry and Don Nehlen, as well as Ohio State coach Urban Meyer.
