Cameron Edge Named Morgan State’s Starting Quarterback

Edge, Mattocks, Harvey, and Nauden named 2026 Team Captains.

BALTIMORE, Md. (Aug. 22, 2026) -- Cameron Edge has been named the starting quarterback for the Morgan State Bears, head coach Damon Wilson announced Saturday morning following the team's practice session.

Edge will take the first snap when Morgan State opens the 2026 season against North Carolina A&T on Aug. 29.

The decision capped a competitive preseason battle that featured several quarterbacks competing for the starting job throughout spring and preseason camp.

"It was tough because we have several guys that are capable of being starters here, which is good for that room," Wilson said. "Cam, I think he did a really good job as far as being more vocal and leading the guys, not just at the practice field, but through summer workouts and everything else. I think he's earned their trust and respect and the opportunity to take the lead in Game 1."

Wilson said Edge's preparation, experience, and understanding of the Bears' expectations helped distinguish him from the other quarterbacks.

"He's put a lot of work in, man," Wilson said. "He puts a lot of time in the coach's room from a film standpoint, like the other guys. But he knows what it takes. He knows what we're looking for. He's seen it at the highest level, and I want to see what he's able to do next week."

The competition behind Edge remains ongoing, with Ade Olanegan currently listed as the No. 2 quarterback. Tahj Smith, Raeden Oliver, Howard Kennedy III and Timothy Cole II also remain in the mix as the Bears continue to develop depth at the position.

"I think he has a great skill set, and I think when it's all said and done, he can definitely be that [QB], and I feel the same way about some other guys in that room as well," Wilson said. "But he's the guy that's up right now to take advantage."

Edge enters the season as the most experienced quarterback on Morgan State's roster, having spent four years in college. He joined the Bears after spending the 2025 season at Eastern Michigan University and began his collegiate career at the University of Maryland, where he spent three seasons.

From 2022 through 2024, Edge worked behind Maryland quarterbacks Taulia Tagovailoa and Billy Edwards Jr. One of his most memorable moments came in the 2023 TransPerfect Music City Bowl, when he completed 4-of-6 passes for 82 yards and threw his first career touchdown pass to wide receiver Kaden Prather.

A four-star recruit coming out of Smyrna High School in Delaware, according to ESPN, Edge threw for 2,990 yards and 27 touchdowns as a junior in 2021 and earned 3A Offensive Player of the Year honors. He reclassified to graduate early and enrolled at Maryland in 2022.

For Edge, the opportunity to become a starting quarterback has come from consistent work rather than one defining moment during camp.

"I would say, really, I think every day is your moment," Edge said. "You get the opportunity to show who you are every day. And really, since I've got here, just prove who I am. Not just as a quarterback, but as a person, as a teammate. Every day you've got to show up and be consistent and make plays when you're asked to do that."

Edge also said his transition to Morgan State has been defined by the relationships he has built with his teammates.

"I would just say how comfortable I am around the guys," Edge said. "I'm just really having a good time being around a lot of the guys I've played with or against in the past, even more so than before. That's not a knock on any other place, but I've just had a lot of fun this offseason building with these guys and really excited for how the season is going to go."

Edge previously told PressBox that his experiences at Maryland and Eastern Michigan helped prepare him for his opportunity at Morgan State.

"I learned from some good coaches in both spots," Edge told PressBox. "At Maryland, I had three years of good coaches and just learning from them and taking that knowledge and just also maturing over time, learning things that I could have done better. I need to keep this, tweak that, and I think it speaks volumes and it'll be huge for this year."

Cam2Wilson said Edge's pedigree as a highly recruited quarterback, combined with what he has learned throughout his collegiate career, gives him the opportunity to make an impact with the Bears.

"He's been a very successful high school quarterback, was a guy that was recruited out of high school and had an opportunity to learn from some bright guys from an offensive standpoint," Wilson said. "He's also just eager to get his opportunity to play. And I like a guy that's educated, with regard to having a high football IQ, but also a guy that has a burning desire inside just to show what he's capable of."

Despite Edge's high-profile background, Wilson emphasized that the quarterback still has plenty to prove at the collegiate level.

"He's probably one of the highest-profile players we've had here in the program as far as coming out of high school, but he hasn't done anything yet in college, and he's looking to do that," Wilson said. "So we're going to give him an opportunity and see what he can do."

As the Bears prepare for the season opener, Wilson said the team's overall development and camaraderie have been among the biggest takeaways from preseason camp.

"Competition," Wilson said. "These guys have really been competing against each other, and the camaraderie that I've seen has been at an all-time high since we've been here. I see that they really care about one another, plan for one another, and they're competing in every phase of the game."

Edge said the Bears will carry that competitive spirit into the season with the goal of improving each week.

"Obviously, we just want to get better week in and week out," Edge said. "I think we're going to go into Week One with a good team, and I think as we enter the season, we'll be an even better team. We just have to keep working on the things we've been working on all offseason and just keep attacking each week and go 1-0 each day."
