Bears Add Two To Coaching Staff

BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State head football coach Fred T. Farrier announced the addition of Rob Spence and Ron Dickerson Jr. to the Bears football coaching staff. Spence was added as the team's new offensive coordinator and Dickerson will coach wide receivers and special teams coordinator.

"It is with great excitement we announce the addition of these two coaches to our staff," said Farrier, who still must hire a new defensive line coach and offensive line coach. "It aligns with "Returning To Greatness."

Spence, a longtime college assistant, spent the past season as the receivers coach at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, and worked two years in the high school game as the head coach at Chattanooga Christian School.

Prior to CCS, Spence was the quarterbacks coach at Rutgers University for two years and before that had worked as offensive coordinator at Clemson and Syracuse. He also has worked on the offensive staffs at Temple, Toledo, Maryland, Louisiana Tech, Bethune-Cookman, Hofstra, Holy Cross and Iona College.

"I have known Coach Spence since my college days when he coached me and helped guide our 1991 team to an undefeated season," said Farrier. "He has coordinated at a high level including having offenses at Clemson, Toledo and Bethune-Cookman that were ranked in the Top-25 nationally in either scoring or total offense on 12 different occasions.  His experience and expertise should pay dividends to help our team improve. I'm excited to have him on-board and have him help us reach our goals moving forward."

The Bears have also hired Ron Dickerson Jr. to coach the wide receivers and special teams. Dickerson, a former football standout at Arkansas and NFL player, coached the Ole Miss receivers from 2008-10 before spending two seasons as the head coach at Gardner-Webb (2011-12). Dickerson was the first African-American head coach in the history of the Big South Conference in the FCS. He also coached at Louisiana-Monroe, Missouri State, Alabama State and Temple in addition to one season with the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL.

"I'm equally excited to have Coach Dickerson join our staff," Farrier said. "He brings head coaching experience and a legacy of coaching with his family that will help our team improve. He will bring tremendous enthusiasm to our team every day. His experience in the SEC and playing in the NFL brings a level of credibility that our players should benefit from. He will assist me with head coaching issues and provide recommendations that will benefit our entire program."

"These men are outstanding football coaches and excellent recruiters, but most importantly they are outstanding men and they will be great teachers and role models for our student-athletes."

Farrier's staff also includes: associate head coach/defensive coordinator Ernest T. Jones, linebackers/co-special teams coach Antonio James, H-Backs and tight ends coach Travis Manger, and running backs coach Ben Thomas.

Morgan State opens the 2017 season at Towson on Sept. 2 and the home-opener at Hughes Stadium will be against Albany on Sept. 9. The Bears' annual Spring Game is slated for a 12 noon start on Saturday, April 29 at Hughes Stadium. Admission is FREE.
