Morgan State softball player Audrianna Alvarez started her senior season off right last weekend during the Dot Richardson Invitational in Clermont, Fla. Alvarez helped the Lady Bears to a 3-2 record, including the program's first 2-0 start since 2009.
 
The senior first baseman began her final season at Morgan State recording a .267 batting average with four hits, including a two-run homer, 2 RBI, two runs scored and two walks, while starting all five games played over the weekend.
 
A native of San Fernando, Calif., Alvarez started the season driving in two runs, following her two-run homerun in a 5-1 season-opening win over Chattanooga (2/10). Later that evening she recorded a hit, scored a run and drew two walks in a win over Fairleigh Dickinson, giving the Lady Bears their first 2-0 start in eight years.
 
The Lady Bears will be back in action this Sunday, Feb. 19 when they host Marist in a non-conference contest. The game gets underway at 2 p.m. and will be played at Coppin State Field on the campus of Coppin State University.
 
Morgan State's official home opener will be a doubleheader series against Mount St. Mary's on March 15 at the newly refurbished Lois T. Murray Field. The first MEAC contest will be at home against Hampton on March 18-19.   

Student Life:
What is the best time of the year on campus? I would say Homecoming Week.
 Why did you choose MSU? I wanted to go as far away from home as possible.
What is your major and why? I originally came in as an accounting major and realized that's not what I wanted to do. I wanted to work with people. I took the intro to social work class and I loved it. 
If you had to give an incoming student advice, what would it be? Make the best of it, because the four [years] go by really fast.
Describe your first day as a student at Morgan. It wasn't that bad because I had all my teammates and I knew where all my classes were, so it wasn't that bad. I think it could have been a lot worse.
What do you like most about Morgan? The students that come here, I think they bring passion about the school and passion about where they're from.
What would you like to change at Morgan State?  I wish there was a lot more places to eat.

Would you rather read the book or watch the movie? Why? I'd rather watch the movie. I could sit and watch a movie all day. A book captures me a little bit, but I'd just get off task.

If you could switch lives with any celebrity, who would it be and why? Beyonce, because she is amazing in every way. She keeps everything very private and I would like to see behind the scenes.

Travel:
Most interesting place you've visited? Mexico, because I was able to see the Aztec pyramids.
Place you would like to visit? France

Food:
Favorite home cooked meal? The thing I have to have when I go home is my dad's meat and horchata.
Favorite snack? Chips 
I hated it when my mom made me eat? Beans -- she would not let me leave the table. I remember sitting there saying "no, I'm going to throw up," I sat there for about four hours. To this day I still don't eat beans.
Favorite breakfast cereal as a kid? Cheerios 
 
Sports:
When is your favorite time of your sports season? When MEAC play begins
Who is your favorite athlete? Why? Sierra Romero, she plays for Team USA
Who do you model your game after? Why? Sierra Romero. I've been watching her since I could remember, and she's Hispanic and you don't see that a lot in the PAC 10 school.
Which team do you most look forward to competing against? Coppin State
Do you have any pre-game/match superstitions or rituals? Before every game I pray, and before I bat I have to do a cross across my chest and put the bat over my head.
What is your favorite part about your sport? How quick the game changes. The game could be yours and one hit can alter the whole game.
If you could play another position, what would it be and why? Shortstop
What is your favorite athletic memory? I think I was eight and I dove into home, and at that age you weren't allowed to dive.
Favorite pro sports team?  LA Dodgers
What is your top skill? Picking the ball at first base
When did you start playing basketball? T-Ball... so I was like four or five.   

Miscellaneous:
Would you rather be rich or famous and why? Rich. I have a really expensive taste, that way I could buy whatever I want.
If you could do one thing over, what would it be? Take softball more serious. When I did, it got me here and I'm thankful for that but I look back at how much girls have progressed, and how much the game has advanced. I think I'd go back and take it a little more serious.
When you are not at practice, what could someone find you doing? They would catch me in the house just relaxing.  
If you could play another sport, what would it be? I wish I would've cheered and danced. I think I'd go back and cheer or dance… as girly as that sounds.
Do you have an interesting nickname? Audri, for short. It's funny because most people think that Audri is my real name.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received? Whatever you're doing, make sure it's worth it.
If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what would it be? I would definitely go back in time to the medieval times.   
What are your goals in life? My goal in life is to be successful in whatever I do like my family and job.
Person you admire the most? My brother, because he's five years older than me. He went to college and played some baseball and got the job he always wanted. I had told dude just stop, but he got the job, so his perseverance is what I admire.
Coolest thing you did this summer? I went to Vegas for my 21^st birthday.
Most prized possession? A teddy bear I've had since I was about eight or nine.
If you could have dinner with three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Barack Obama, Tupac and my godmother who passed away.
Dream event? My wedding
