Box Score NORFOLK, Va. (April 10, 2016)-Following an extra day of rest after Saturday's originally scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to adverse wind conditions, the Lady Bears and Norfolk State Spartans finally took the field Sunday afternoon at NSU Softball Field.
Morgan State would win the opening game of the doubleheader, 9-2 to end a 13-game losing skid to the Spartans. The win would also be the Lady Bears' first victory over the Spartans since a 9-1 victory in five innings in the opener of the Norfolk State Tournament on Feb. 25, 2011.
The Lady Bears (10-20, 5-2 MEAC), who extended their season-long winning streak to five games, improved to 11-28 all-time against the Spartans. Morgan State's win prevents the Spartans from sweeping the season series for the first time in five seasons. Since Norfolk State moved into the MEAC Northern Division prior to the 2012 season, the Spartans had swept Morgan State each of the previous four seasons.

Morgan State took a 2-0 lead when Audrianna Alvarez scored from third on a passed ball. Kimber Salvas, who reached base on a single up the middle, later scored on an RBI double hit to left center by Danielle Pitpit to give the guests a 3-0 lead.
Norfolk State (10-17, 5-3 MEAC) got two runs in the bottom of the first inning when Kayla McNair doubled to left center to score Seana Moriarty and Whitney Williams to pull the Spartans within 3-2.
The Lady Bears went back to work in the second inning, scoring four more runs to take a 7-2 advantage. Alvarez singled to score Damali Young for a 4-2 lead. Korynna Lara singled to drive in Kate Vosper and advanced to second on the throw. Salvas singled and advanced to third on an error by the center fielder to drive in Alvarez and Lara for the final two runs and extend the Morgan State lead to 7-2.
The score would remain that way until the Morgan scored its eighth run in the fourth inning when Giselle Alvarez crossed the plate on a wild pitch.
A single by Caitlyn Williams in the seventh inning scored Stormy Zyzyk to extend the Morgan State lead to 9-2.Â
The Lady Bears would finish the game scoring nine runs on nine hits and had one error. The host Spartans had five hits, scoring two runs and had an error.
