Norfolk State cruises past Bears, 27-14

NORFOLK, Va. -- The number has increased to 10.

Morgan State's miscues and inconsistent offense, helped Norfolk State beat the Bears 27-14 on Saturday before a "Green & Gold" homecoming crowd of 18,405. It was the Spartan's first conference win of the season.
 
Norfolk State (2-6, 1-4) improved its lead in the series to 20-11, and has run their consecutive win-streak against the Bears to 10-straight since 2007.
 
Morgan State has dropped its last three contests and has fallen to 2-5 overall and sit at 2-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play.
 
Norfolk State capitalized on the Bears' first turnover of the game after newly minted starting quarterback DeAndre Harris fumbled on his own 24 yard line. It only took the Spartans just 47 seconds to light up the scoreboard as NSU's Greg Hankerson tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Gerard Johnson. Cameron Marouf's extra point game the Spartans a 7-0 lead at the 6:47 mark of the first quarter.
 
The Bears responded early in the second quarter when Harris connected on a 16-yard TD pass to senior wideout Landen Malbrough. The point after by Alex Raya knotted the ballgame at 7 apiece.
 
The Spartans capped the first half scoring with a 27-yard field goal by Marouf to help NSU take a 10-7 lead into the intermission.
 
Norfolk State cruised in the second half and scored the next 17 points to put the ballgame out of reach. Hankerson completed 17 of 30 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for 59 yards on 12 carries.
 
The Bears went 3-and-out on their first drive of the third quarter, and a 12-yard shanked punt by Raya gave the Spartans the ball on MSU's 29. Two plays later, Hankerson completed a 2-yard TD pass to Larry Bishop to help increase the lead to 17-7 with 7:59 remaining in the third quarter.
 
NSU extended its lead when Chuma Awwana took a pass from Hankerson and proceeded to race past three defenders for a 63-yard touchdown. The Spartans entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 24-7 lead.
 
The Spartans capped its scoring when Marouf booted in a 20-yard field goal to go up 27-7.
 
MSU got on the scoreboard with just under a minute left to play when Harris threw his second touchdown of the game to Malbrough (6 rec., 75 yds).
 
Harris, a true freshman, threw for 161 yards on 18 for 34 passing with two scores. He also had a pair of turnovers (fumble & interception) in his first start of the season. Lamont Brown III had a solid game and finished with 11 carries for 66 yards (6.0 avg).

MSU defensive lineman Jai Franklin led all defenders with a game-high 10 tackles to go along with 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Terry Harris added nine stops at safety in his first start of the season.The Bears limited NSU's offense to just 81 yards on the ground.

Next week, the Bears host Bethune-Cookman (2-5, 2-3) at Hughes Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 pm.
