2009 All-MEAC Teams
BALTIMORE, Md. – Morgan State University linebacker George Howard was selected Tuesday as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. It marked the second consecutive season the Bears have had a player earn the conference's top honor.
Howard leads a list of nine (9) Bears selected as the MEAC announced its All-Conference First and Second Teams, The MEAC's head coaches and sports information directors made the selections.
Howard joins the Bears' Jarrell Guyton, who won the award in 2008, Eugene Simms, who won the award in 1973, and James Dozier, who won the award in 1990.
It marked the fourth time MSU head coach Donald Hill-Eley has had a MEAC Player of the Year selection, and it marked his second Defensive Player of the Year.
“It's definitely a derserving honor for a dedicated player,” said coach Hill. “He added excitement to the conference and a presence to our defensive unit. The young man worked hard ever since joining our program and I'm very happy to see him achieve such an honor.”
Howard, a Chesapeake, Virginia native, was one of the premier linebackers in the nation. The 6-1, 230 pounder was a fierce competitor anchored the Bears defensive unit.
The Hitman” earned the MEAC's Defensive Player of the Weekthree times this season and completed his career by leading the MEAC in tackles with 130 (11.8 avg/g) including 73 solo and 57 assisted. He currently ranks fourth in the FCS in tackles per game. Howard recorded nine tackles for a loss of 40 yards, one pass break up,two quarterback hurries and three forced fumbles this season and had a career-high 18 tackles in a win against cross-town rival Towson.
