Ekundayo Sogbesan captured the 400 meter dash in a time of 56.53.
NEW YORK, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2011)-The Morgan State women's indoor track and field team opened up the 2011 portion of its schedule on Friday, when it returned to the track to compete in the NYC Gotham Cup held at the Armory Track & Field Center.
A layoff of more than a month for the Lady Bears, who last competed at Kent State in the Golden Flash Gala (12/11/10), did not hinder the squad, which had 10 top 10 finishes.
Senior Tanisha Kendrick and freshman Ekundayo Sogbesan picked up where they left off in 2010, as each captured first in their respective races. Kendrick won the 500 meter run in a time of 1:15.06, while Sogbesan claimed first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.53. Senior Avionne Sloan crossed the line in seventh in the 500 meter run in a time of 1:17.39.
The Lady Bears had three athletes reach the finals of the 60 meter dash, but it was Teyanna Green (7.71/4th) and Brittney Wattley (7.85/10th) who both placed in the top 10 of the event.
The women's 4,000 meter distance medley relay also placed within the top 10, coming in ninth. The team comprised of Lauren Campbell, Jasmine Hilts, Naomi Tucker and Danielle Calhoun finished the relay in a time of 13:40.40.
Briana Barlow claimed 10th in the finals of the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.16, beating out fellow teammate Monae Waller, who finished in a time of 9.23 for 11th-place.
Morgan State also had success in the field events as well. Candace Shirley placed second in the weight throw with a throw of 55-feet-00. Ranita Mealer finished ninth in the shot put seeded section with a toss of 41-0.25, while Waller finished in a two-way tie in the high jump with a jump of 5-feet-3.
