Morgan State Men's Basketball Completes Series Sweep of Norfolk State

BALTIMORE, Md. (March 2, 2026) – A three-point barrage powered the Morgan State Bears to a 90–84 victory over the Norfolk State Spartans in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference showdown Saturday at Hill Field House.
Graduate guard Walter Peggs Jr. led the charge, drilling a game-high five three-pointers to spark the Bears' offense.

The contest was tightly contested through the opening minutes of the first half before Morgan State seized control at the 12-minute mark. The Bears erupted on a 32–15 run to close the half, carrying a 14-point advantage into the break. During that pivotal stretch, Peggs caught fire from beyond the arc, knocking down three consecutive triples off assists from David Bumpass, Elijah Davis, and Alfred Worrell Jr.

Senior guard Rob Lawson added to the long-range showcase in the second half, burying two key three-pointers to help fend off a Norfolk State rally. Elijah Davis turned in an all-around performance, recording a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists to steer the offense down the stretch.

With the win, Morgan State improves to 13–15 overall and 9–4 in conference play, moving into sole possession of second place in the MEAC standings. The victory also completed the regular-season sweep of Norfolk State — the Bears' first season sweep of the Spartans since 2009–10.

OPENING TIP
• Five players for Morgan State scored in double figures, led by Walter Peggs Jr. and Rob Lawson, who each poured in a game-high 20 points. Eugene Alvin, Alfred Worrell, and Elijah Davis also reached double digits to balance the scoring attack.
Eugene Alvin added 19 points while asserting himself in the paint with two blocked shots and five rebounds across 35 minutes of action.
Alfred Worrell Jr. turned in a strong all-around performance, pulling down a team- and season-high eight rebounds. He also showcased his playmaking ability with five assists and contributed 16 points, including eight from the free-throw line.
• Anthony McCombs III led the Spartans with a game-high 23 points on 7-for-18 shooting from the field, including 4-for-8 from beyond the arc.
• Jaquel Morris recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds off the bench, and Devon Ellis added 14 points and seven boards.

THE DIFFERENCE
• The Morgan State Bears shot an efficient 49 percent (28-of-57) from the field and a scorching 50 percent (14-of-28) from three-point range. Meanwhile, the Norfolk State Spartans finished at 39 percent overall and just 3-of-19 from beyond the arc.
• Morgan knocked down nine more three-pointers than Norfolk State, a decisive factor in the outcome.
• The Bears pushed the tempo effectively, turning defense into offense and scoring 30 fast-break points.
• Despite the loss, the Spartans controlled the glass, winning the rebounding battle 50–35.
• Morgan dictated the pace throughout, leading for 36 of the 40 minutes.
• A quick 6–0 burst in the second half stretched the Bears' advantage to a game-high 19 points. The run featured back-to-back buckets from Elijah Davis and a layup by Eugene Alvin. Morgan sealed the win at the free-throw line, closing the game with seven made free throws — three from Davis and four from Alfred Worrell.

NOTABLE
• NSU leads the series 49-20.
• The Bears improve to 10-0 this season when leading at halftime (6-0 in the MEAC).
Elijah Davis' 15 points and 10 assists mark his fourth double-double of the season, including his third double-digit assist performance in his last four games.
• The game also marked Greek Day.

NOTE THE QUOTE | COACH KEVIN BROADUS

Coach Broadus praised his team's intensity and resilience, emphasizing the significance of the moment while keeping the focus forward.

"I want to take my hat off to Norfolk State, especially Coach Rob Jones — a friend of mine. That's a championship-brand program. Those guys know how to win," Broadus said. "But today was a new day for us. I told our guys, 'If you match my intensity, I'll live with the results.' From start to finish, they matched it. We controlled the tempo, had a few hiccups, but I'm proud of how we stayed the course."

With the victory, the Morgan State Bears completed their first regular-season sweep of Norfolk State since 2009–10. Broadus, however, downplayed the historical element.

"A sweep is sweet, but it's just another check on the board," he said. "All we want to do is go 1–0 in the next one. It's March — this is the time of year you want to be playing your best basketball."

Broadus also highlighted the team's response following a tough outing against Howard, noting the growth and maturity of his group.

"We could've hung our heads after that loss, but we didn't. Yesterday and today, these guys came in and put the work in. If we make 14 threes, we're going to be tough to beat. They were gritty, grimy, and tough — that's what it takes."

The Bears' bench contributed nearly 20 points, something Broadus said is a reflection of the team's depth.

"Our practices are so competitive there's no drop-off. A lot of those guys could start at other places. We expect that kind of production."

WALTER PEGGS JR.
"Coach told us to stay in the present moment," said Peggs, who hit three straight three-pointers during a pivotal first-half run. "Elijah and I talked about staying ready and taking good shots. My role is to bring that spark, so I just stayed poised."

ALFRED WORRELL JR.
Worrell, who led the team with eight rebounds, focused on impacting the game beyond scoring. "It wasn't just about points. I wanted to contribute in different ways — rebounding, assists — whatever the team needed."

ELIJAH DAVIS
Davis, who recorded another double-double, said confidence in the group never wavered. "We didn't shoot it well in the last game, but we're known for making shots. I trust my guys. When we're clicking together, we're special."

UP NEXT
Morgan State returns to action on Thursday, March 5, as the Bears host the Coppin State Eagles in the regular season finale at Hill Field House. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. and will mark Senior Night for the Bears.
